Position Summary
This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). It may be responsible for providing coverage at multiple locations. The role involves collecting and receiving biological specimens, entering data into the company's computer system, preparing samples for analytical testing, and distributing specimens to the proper analytical area. Responsibilities also include pre‑ and post‑testing aspects, performing specified analytical testing as assigned, and following the guidelines of the Code of Conduct. All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable professional standards.
Core Functions
- Specimen collection and general laboratory specimen processing or referral laboratory processing, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification, integrity, and appropriate techniques for all age criteria.
- Enter and verify patient demographics, physician data, requested tests, collection time and date, relevant clinical information, and all other requisite data. Verify accuracy and appropriateness of specimens, aliquot and label specimens, deliver them to the technical area promptly, and assist in monitoring workflow and training new employees.
- Focus on quality by ensuring all work is accurate and complete. Maintain legible documentation, follow established methods, and record communications. Initiate computer‑generated reports for patient reporting and quality assurance monitoring. Meet departmental productivity and quality standards and provide input to committees or Six Sigma teams.
- Participate in departmental financial responsibilities through careful use of supplies and materials, avoiding waste and contributing to initiatives that reduce costs and improve service. Basic billing knowledge is required.
- Communicate courteously and professionally with internal and external customers, collaborate with co‑workers with an emphasis on teamwork and customer service, resolve basic service issues, and attend meetings and stay current with internal/external communications.
- Acknowledge the importance of patient rights and privacy (HIPAA).
Physical Demands / Environment Factors
Stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently. Lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity and use of standard precautions against exposure to blood, body fluids, chemicals, electrical, and biological hazards. Ability to distinguish colors, take directions, assimilate instructions, and use computers, printers, copiers, telephone, fax, and department‑specific equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum age of 18.
- High school diploma or equivalent, as required by state regulatory requirements.
- Basic knowledge of department resource materials.
- Completion of a phlebotomy program or relevant phlebotomy experience.
- Phlebotomy certification as defined by state regulations.
- May require DHS Fingerprinting Certification or ability to obtain fingerprint certification.
- Valid state driver’s license in the state of employment and eligibility for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
- Floater positions require travel, flexible hours, work at multiple locations, and coverage of mobile or in‑office phlebotomy facilities with minimal notice. Availability for weekends, holidays, overtime, and occasional on‑call duties, including nights and early mornings.
- Progression through career ladder II–IV is subject to completion of ladder requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual (Spanish/English).
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Additional related education and/or experience.
