Job summary

The Patient Service Center Phlebotomist at Beth Israel Lahey Health performs specimen collections and delivers high-quality customer service in a busy PSC setting across clinics and physician offices.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED; Associate’s degree welcomed.
  • Phlebotomy certification from ASCP preferred.
  • One or more years experience as a phlebotomist or in a PSC is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Basic familiarity with computer applications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent phlebotomy and related services for all patients.
  • Validate/update patient demographics and orders in the BILH system; enter data for new patients.
  • Collect specimens by venipuncture and capillary methods for all ages.
  • Prepare specimens for transport to a BILH laboratory.
  • Perform daily administrative tasks to open/close the PSC.
  • Assist in training, coaching, and mentoring PSC phlebotomists as needed.
  • Travel to additional PSCs and doctor offices as required.
  • Read and comply with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Report to the Phlebotomy Supervisor and participate in QA activities.
  • Support patient satisfaction initiatives and quality programs.

Job description

When you join the growing BILH team, you’re not just taking a job, you’re making a difference in people’s lives. The Patient Service Center Phlebotomist works in a Patient Service Center (draw station) located in a Beth Israel Lahey Health - Primary Care practice, a dedicated office suite in a medical office building, or a doctor’s office. In this role, you will perform specimen collections, provide exceptional customer service, and be the face and voice of the BILH Laboratories to patients.

Responsibilities
  • Provide excellent phlebotomy and phlebotomy‑related services for all patients.
  • For patients whose lab tests have already been ordered in a BILH computer system, validate and/or update the patient’s demographic and information in a BILH computer system; for other patients, collect and accurately enter the patient’s demographic information, insurance information, and lab test orders into a BILH computer system.
  • Collect specimens according to established procedures, including blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques, for all age groups.
  • Prepare all collected specimens for transport via a courier service to a BILH laboratory.
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties as necessary to open, operate, and close the Patient Service Center on a daily basis.
  • Perform additional duties when requested by the Phlebotomy Supervisor, such as assisting in training, coaching, and mentoring PSC Phlebotomists.
  • Travel to additional Patient Service Centers and doctor’s office sites when needed.
  • Read, understand, and comply with all departmental policies and procedures.
  • Report to, receive training from, and take direction from the Phlebotomy Supervisor responsible for the assigned Patient Service Center.
  • Participate in lab QA programs, competency assessments, and continuing education.
  • Consistently provide services that meet the needs of patients and providers, and that help ensure a high degree of patient satisfaction with the services provided.
  • Perform other similar tasks requested by the Phlebotomy Supervisor or the Manager of BILH Phlebotomy Services.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED (Associate’s Degree or college classes welcomed).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Comfortable working with minimal supervision.
  • Basic familiarity with computer applications preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification from ASCP or another accredited agency preferred.
  • Previous experience as a phlebotomist preferred.
  • One or more years previous experience working in lab Patient Service Centers preferred.
Competencies
  • Written Communications: Ability to read and write in English to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with patients, families and other medical center staff; and respond to basic questions.
  • Oral Communications: Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions.
  • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations; specialized knowledge not required.
  • Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service‑oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving; ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Physical Nature Of The Job

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout the hospital campus.

Pay Range

$22.00 - $22.69 (base hourly wage range; actual compensation may exceed base rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices).

Additional Requirements

All staff must be vaccinated against influenza (flu) as a condition of employment.
