Responsibilities

  • Verifies test requisitions / orders; follows up with provider for discrepancies.
  • Verifies patient identity and proper specimen labeling techniques.
  • Obtains blood specimens by venipuncture, heel sticks, and other collection methods.
  • Maintains specimen integrity using aseptic technique and observes isolation procedures.
  • Performs EKGs and transmits results.
  • Maintains a safe and compliant work environment per regulations.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting physicians or labs and notifies supervisor of unresolved orders.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Job description

The Phlebotomist Outpatient obtains and prepares specimens for analysis and performs various screening tests in an ambulatory setting.

Required
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Preferred
  • Associate Degree in a science related field
  • ASCP or equivalent Phlebotomy Certification
  • Previous experience as a Phlebotomist, EMT, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Tech

In addition to the essential functions of the job listed below, employees must maintain timely completion of all required education, trainings, and certifications as assigned and in accordance with Bozeman Health policies, department-specific requirements, applicable certification program and registry requirements, and other applicable regulatory requirements.

Essential Job Functions
  • Verifies test requisitions / orders; follows up with ordering provider if there are discrepancies.
  • Verifies patient by reading patient identification. Follows proper specimen labeling techniques.
  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures, heel sticks, and other collection techniques.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
  • Performs EKGs and transmits results.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Schedule Requirements
  • This role requires regular and sustained attendance.
  • The position may necessitate working beyond a standard 40-hour workweek, including weekends and after-hours shifts.
  • On-call work may be required to respond promptly to organizational, patient, or employee needs.

Exposures (Continuously): Bloodborne pathogens, such as blood, bodily fluids, or tissues. Radiation in settings where medical imaging procedures are performed. Various chemicals and medications are used in healthcare settings. Job tasks may involve handling cleaning products, disinfectants, and other substances. Infectious diseases are caused by contact with patients in areas that may have contagious illnesses. Emotionally challenging situations, such as dealing with distressed patients or difficult family interactions.
