Job summary

Salina Family Healthcare Center in Salina, KS is seeking a Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant to collect blood and other specimens, process and label samples, and perform related clerical tasks to support lab operations.

The role supports the lab mission of compassionate care and education, requiring attention to HIPAA, accuracy, and teamwork; CPR certification is required, phlebotomy certification preferred, and prior lab exposure is beneficial.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 1 year experience in a medical or lab environment beneficial.
• CPR certification required.
• Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collect venipunctures or finger sticks on patients.
• Place orders into Laboratory Information System.
• Send out drug testing by urinalysis or blood and complete forms and properly package specimens for shipment by Fed Ex.
• Collect in-house 12-Drug Panels.
• Enter and complete paper and electronic orders via Athena Health into Orchard.
• Perform accessioning of patient specimens for testing and send out.
• Perform patient testing, QC and Proficiency testing on listed instruments and test kits.
• Prepare outgoing tests for reference laboratory.
• Ensure physicians review laboratory results by routing patient test results.
• Perform daily cleaning and disinfecting in draw station.
• Maintain draw room in a neat and orderly fashion.
• Assure draw room stock and inventory.
• Inventory stock and supplies and prepare order sheet for downstairs lab staff.
• Participate in professional development and continuing education as required.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient’s medical records.

Phlebotomist\\Lab Assistant General Description

The Phlebotomist\\Lab Assistant collects blood and other specimens, processes and labels samples, and manages clerical tasks to support the lab operations.

Phlebotomist\\Lab Assistant Essential Duties

1. Collect laboratory specimens by performing venipunctures or finger sticks on patients. May assist nursing staff or physicians in collection of other specimens for testing.
2. Place orders into Laboratory Information System.
3. Send out drug testing by urinalysis or blood and complete forms and properly package specimens for shipment by Fed Ex.
4. Collect in-house 12-Drug Panels.
5. Enter and complete paper and electronic orders via Athena Health into Orchard.
6. Perform accessioning of patient specimens for testing and send out. This includes: logging in specimens on daily laboratory log, operating the centrifuge and aliquoting specimens.
   
7. Performs patient testing, QC and Proficiency testing on the following instruments and test kits: Freestyle Precision Point of Care Glucose Meter, Rapid Strep, Rapid Flu A & B, Rapid Covid, Rapid RSV, and iFOB.
   
8. Prepare outgoing tests for reference laboratory.
9. Ensure that physicians review laboratory results by appropriately routing patient test results.
10. Perform daily cleaning and disinfecting in draw station.
11. Maintain draw room in a neat and orderly fashion.
12. Assure that draw room is stocked at all times and maintain adequate stock inventory.
13. Inventory stock and supplies and prepare order sheet for downstairs lab staff to order the supplies.
14. Participate in professional development activities and continuing education as required.
15. Maintain confidentiality of patient’s medical records.
    

Phlebotomist\\Lab Assistant Skills Required

1. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, patients, and the public.
2. Knowledge of HIPAA privacy rules and regulations.
3. Excellent customer service skills and ability to effectively and respectfully interact with others.
4. Ability to manage multiple tasks, work under pressure, and prioritize workload.

7. Knowledge of standard office machines.

Phlebotomist\\Lab Assistant Education and Experience

1. High school diploma or GED;
2. 1 year experience in a medical and\\or lab environment (not required but is beneficial);
3. Phlebotomy certification is preferred, but not required;
4. Must have and maintain CPR certification;
5. Social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to ethnically and economically diverse patient and employee-base.
