Job summary

St. Mary Medical Center Lab Client Services in Hobart, IN is seeking a Phlebotomist for full-time evening shifts (09:45-18:15, 12:30-21:00, 13:30-22:00).

The Phlebotomist collects blood specimens and other samples from inpatients and outpatients using aseptic technique under supervision. Responsibilities include problem-solving for specimen collection, delivering specimens to the main laboratory, entering test orders and LIS data, and performing incidental clerical duties.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Successful completion of accredited Phlebotomy certification program.
• Registered or eligible with NPA/NCA/ASPT/AMT/ASCP. Must pass certification within 1 year of hire.
• One year of previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Medical Assistant certification must be maintained yearly if part of curriculum.

Responsibilities

• Collect blood specimens, urine and other specimens from inpatients and outpatients using aseptic technique.
• Troubleshoot specimen collection issues and ensure proper delivery to the main laboratory.
• Enter test orders and specimen information in LIS.
• Perform incidental clerical, cleaning and supply duties.
• Work under supervision of Laboratory Supervisor/General Specialist and Laboratory Site Director.

The Phlebotomist serves as a liaison between the hospital laboratory and the patient by collecting blood specimens, urine and other specimens from both inpatients and outpatients, under general supervision, according to prescribed aseptic technique, for use in clinical and diagnostic laboratory testing. The Phlebotomist is capable of handling problem-solving regarding appropriate specimen collection, handling, delivery of specimens to the main laboratory for analysis, test order and specimen information entry in LIS, and performs incidental clerical, cleaning and supply duties. Duties are performed under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor/General Specialist, and Laboratory Site Director.

Education/Experience:

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Successful completion of accredited Phlebotomy certification program.
• Registered or eligible with NPA/NCA/ASPT/AMT/ASCP. Must pass certification within 1 year of hire.
• One year of previous experience in phlebotomy preferred.
• Medical Assistant does not need a phlebotomy certification if part of curriculum. MA certification must be maintained yearly.
