Job summary

OSF HealthCare in Illinois is seeking a Phlebotomist I to obtain blood and other specimens according to policy while maintaining patient safety and specimen integrity. You will work independently and with a team, ensuring proper labeling and timely transport to the lab.

Minimum education is High School/GED. Experience in phlebotomy or healthcare and familiarity with EMR systems like Epic are preferred. Excellent communication and attention to detail are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood and other specimens according to established policies and procedures.
  • Verify patient identification, prepare skin sites, and label specimens.
  • Transport specimens to laboratory and ensure timely processing.
  • Maintain professional relationships with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Perform clerical and/or computer duties as needed in the lab.

Expected pay for this position is $19.96 - $24.39/hour. Actual pay will be determined by experience, skills and internal equity. This is an Hourly position.

Overview
POSITION SUMMARY

The Phlebotomist I obtains blood and other specimens according to established policies and procedures from any location where patients may be present for laboratory testing. In doing so, obtains needed supplies, verifies patient identification, prepares skin sites, and performs venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques. Labels specimens and transports same to laboratory for analysis. This position works independently and as a part of a team, performs clerical and/or computer duties associated with the laboratory, and provides timely specimen collection and routing of laboratory specimens. Maintains professional relationships with patients, staff, and physicians. Duties may vary by assigned area and/or shift.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • High School/GED
Other Skills/knowledge
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft software.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to be detail oriented.
License/Certifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • CPR Certification through the American Heart Association
  • Phlebotomy Technician Certification (PBT)
Experience
  • 6 months in a team orientated environment or customer service role.
  • Completion of formal structured phlebotomy program OR 3 months' full-time phlebotomy experience or equivalent.
  • Experience working with an electronic medical record system, such as Epic.
  • Maintain composure while working under pressure; ability to perform job duties with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
