Job summary

The Phlebotomist at ScionHealth is responsible for performing venipunctures and related specimen collection tasks, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation. This role prepares specimens for laboratory testing, maintains work areas, and adheres to infection control protocols while interacting professionally with patients.

You will log specimens in the LIS, assist with clerical tasks, follow safety standards, and participate in training and quality assurance as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred; BLS within policy timeframe.

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipunctures and capillary punctures to collect blood specimens as ordered.
  • Labels, logs, and processes specimens according to laboratory protocols.
  • Prepares collection trays and maintains clean, stocked work areas.
  • Provides patients with clear instructions on collection procedures and tests.
  • Monitors patient condition during and after collection to ensure safety.
  • Documents specimen collection in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Assists with clerical tasks including data entry and patient records management.
  • Adheres to infection control and safety protocols in all interactions.
  • Responds to inquiries from patients, staff, and departments regarding lab services.
  • Participates in training, quality assurance, and continuing education as required.

Job Summary

The Phlebotomist interacts with patients professionally and provides accurate information regarding collection procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Performs venipunctures and capillary punctures to collect blood specimens as ordered
  • Properly labels, logs, and processes specimens according to laboratory protocols
  • Prepares collection trays and ensures the cleanliness and restocking of work areas
  • Provides clear instructions to patients regarding collection procedures and tests
  • Monitors patient condition during and after specimen collection to ensure safety
  • Documents specimen collection in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Assists with clerical tasks including filing, data entry, and managing patient records
  • Ensures compliance with infection control and safety protocols in all patient interactions
  • Responds to inquiries from patients, staff, and other departments regarding laboratory services
  • Participates in training, quality assurance, and continuing education as required

  • Knowledge of specimen collection techniques, equipment, and protocols

  • Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs in a clinical setting
Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program preferred
Licenses/Certifications
  • Phlebotomy Certification preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within timeframe required by facility policy
Experience
  • Six (6) months of acute care phlebotomy experience or one (1) year experience in outpatient lab setting preferred.
  • Certain facilities may require prior laboratory experience based on operational needs, staffing models, or complexity of services provided.
