Job summary

MLK Community Healthcare in Los Angeles, CA seeks a Phlebotomist responsible for specimen collection from patients and supporting CLS staff. You will restock supplies, perform clerical duties, and ensure accurate LIS data entry while maintaining a clean, patient-friendly workspace.

You will report to the Phlebotomy Lead and Lab Manager, representing the lab to patients and staff and upholding the hospital's mission and core values.

Qualifications

• 6 months of experience in blood specimen collections; 3 years preferred.
• Internal CA Certified Phlebotomy Technician License considered.
• Proficient with LIS and computer applications.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association.
• Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Restock phlebotomy supplies for all three shifts.
• Perform all clerical duties.
• Communicate appropriately with coworkers, hospital personnel, physicians.
• Maintain coverage of the laboratory to ensure patient care with possible last-minute schedule changes.
• Collect samples from inpatients by venipuncture or skin puncture per policies.
• Inventory, report and restock phlebotomy supplies to ensure continuity.
• Deliver specimens to the lab as needed.
• Data entry and LIS proficiency; proficient with LIS backup.
• Assist customers with LIS information.
• Keep the workplace clean and neat.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collection of specimens from patients. The phlebotomist is also cross-trained to assist the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) when possible; assigned to assist in the specimen processing and filing. This person will report to the Phlebotomy Lead and Lab Manager Implements good public relations by representing the laboratory directly to patients, physicians and hospital staff at all times. Assures quality of work, workflow, turn-around-time; assures accurate testing to support quality patient care; accepts suggestions and corrections and adjusts to changing situations. This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. It is expected that thisindividualwill demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values andshall support theHospital's strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement process activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assures that phlebotomy supplies are restocked for all three shifts.
• Responsible for all clerical duties.
• Communicates appropriately with coworkers, hospital personnel, physicians at all times.
• Maintain coverage of the laboratory to provide adequate patient care, which may require "last minute" schedule changes.
• Collects samples from inpatients using standard venipuncture or skin puncture techniques according to established policies and procedures.
• Inventories, reports and restocks all phlebotomy testing supplies to ensure continuity of activities.
• Delivers specimens to the lab as needed.
• Responsible for data entry and appropriate proficiency using the Lab Information System (LIS) Computer systems.
• Is proficient in using manual backup to the Lab Information System (LIS).
• Assist customers with LIS Information.
• Assures that the workplace is clean and neat.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent

B. Qualifications/Experience

• 6 months of experience required in blood specimen collections; 3 years preferred. Internal candidates with Current CA Certified Phlebotomy Technician License will be considered.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge

• Proficient with LIS and computer applications
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association.
• Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
