Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Phlebotomist to collect blood specimens by venipuncture and perform EKG and point-of-care testing for inpatients and outpatients. You will review orders and prepare ABN when needed, ensuring accurate specimen handling and documentation.

The role includes a 40-hour week with evening shifts (2:00 PM–10:30 PM) on a rotating schedule, every other weekend/holiday, with potential travel to other locations.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required or documented phlebotomy training.
• Phlebotomy training or prior phlebotomy experience preferred.
• BLS certification required within 3 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy with proper technique.
• Review physician orders to ensure tests meet Medical Necessity.
• Prepare ABN forms for tests not meeting guidelines and obtain signatures.
• Perform EKG, pulse oximetry and related testing and maintain equipment.

Hiring Range: $20.32 - $38.17 (based on a full time schedule of 40 hours per week).

Please note that the final offer will vary based on scheduled hours.

Compensation for part-time or reduced schedules will be prorated based on scheduled weekly hours, experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.

Schedule Details: Holidays - Every Other Holiday, Sunday through Saturday, Weekends - Every Other Weekend Scheduled Hours: 40hr, Eve: 2pm-10:30pm, every other weekend, every other holiday, Maybe required to work and travel to other locations and campuses per the needs of the department. Collects blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary from patients. Performs EKG, pulse oximetry, and point-of-care testing on inpatients and outpatients as required.

Major Responsibilities

• Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy procedures on patients using appropriate specimen collection equipment and techniques.
• Review requisition and orders from physicians to ensure appropriate tests are drawn and tests meet guidelines for Medical Necessity.
• Prepares Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for tests that do not meet Medical Necessity guidelines and obtains appropriate signatures from patient and self.
• Performs EKG, pulse oximetry and point-of-care testing procedures as requested and associated quality control and maintenance of instrumentation.
• Processes specimens including centrifugation, pour-off, aliquoting, labeling, and packaging.
• Provides essential patient data and insurance information for registration of specimens.
• May create registration for outreach specimens in Hospital Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) system.

Position Qualifications

• License/Certification/Education: Required: High School graduate with successful completion from a recognized program for training in phlebotomy or prior documented experience performing phlebotomy.
• Preferred: Experience/Skills: Required: Basic life support certification required within 3 months of employment. Maintenance of annual competencies in BLS.
• 2pm -10:30pm every other weekend, every other holiday. Flex. Maybe required to work and travel to other locations and campuses per the needs of the department.
