Job description

PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

Performs the day‑to‑day phlebotomy duties within the office setting, in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations and as may be directed by the Director.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

• Is well organized and uses a systematic approach to all areas of work while courteously and informatively receiving the patients, continuing the organized process even during busy periods and following instructions with little or no follow‑up or supervision.
• Consistently obtains the proper specimens, verifies patient’s identity by name and date of birth, and properly labels specimens, understanding the importance of specimen integrity on test results and patient care.
• Uses good judgment when procuring specimens from difficult patients or unusual circumstances and when handling unusual laboratory requests, documenting any deviation from standard procedure in the computer system.
• Opportunistically prioritizes the collection and delivery of stat, urgent, timed, and routine orders to the laboratory, correctly prioritizing the collection of timed specimens.
• Properly maintains and obtains phlebotomy items for blood collection on the phlebotomy tray and/or outpatient laboratory, ensuring neatness.
• Performs point‑of‑care (POC) testing as appropriate for the office.
• Understand patient’s confidentiality rights.
• Communicates and acts with patients reflecting BVHS scripting and Service Excellence attributes, meeting patients’ needs in a timely manner with appropriate phone and listening skills; interacts well with patients, physicians, and other professionals.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide appropriate care relative to the age‑specific needs of patients, complying with all BVHA organizational and safety policies, practices, and procedures.
• Performs additional duties as directed by office clinical lead and/or office supervisor/office leadership, such as supply ordering, gap calls, special projects, and cross‑training to register/room patients.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Knowledge of clinical or anatomical laboratory functions, medical terminology or science background.
• A valid driver’s license is required. If you do not have a valid Ohio driver’s license, you must obtain one within 30 days of residency in the state and meet BVHS’s company fleet policy and insurance company requirements.
• Positive, service‑oriented interpersonal and communication skills required.
• Must be organized, able to prioritize, work in a fast‑pace environment, and have excellent problem‑solving skills.
• Must be customer focused, service‑oriented, and able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
• Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
• Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on the assigned unit/department, demonstrating the principles of growth and development over the life span and the ability to assess data reflecting patient status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age‑specific needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in an allied health field.
• Experience preferred and PBT(ASCP) registration.
• Completion of a regionally accredited phlebotomy certificate program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent walking, lifting, bending, climbing, squatting, kneeling, twisting, sitting and standing. The associate will be required to walk, bend and stand up to seven hours a day, lift twenty to fifty pounds, and reach work above the shoulders. Excellent eye‑hand coordination, finger dexterity, and the ability to grasp different items are essential, as is the ability to visualize patient veins and hear audible alarms. This position requires the associate to work at a high rate of speed and to drive from various locations.

This position is classified “at risk” for possible occupational exposure to blood‑borne pathogens (HBV, HIV, etc.).
