Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems in Richmond is seeking a Phlebotomist to ensure proper collection of blood and other specimens from outpatients and inpatients of all ages.

You will perform pre-analytical processing, enter orders in HIS/LIS, verify specimens, and maintain safety and accuracy while providing courteous service. Some after-hours on-call may be required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Phlebotomy or medical assistant training preferred.
  • 0–3 years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all ages.
  • Collect non-blood specimens (urine, stool, sputum) for testing.
  • Process specimens using computer systems per SOPs.
  • Verify patient identification per policy.
  • Take call after hours and weekends as scheduled.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.
  • Stock supplies daily and perform data entry of test orders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Phlebotomist assures proper collection of blood and non‑blood samples by venipuncture and capillary puncture as applicable from outpatients and/or inpatients in all age groups as requested by physicians.

The Phlebotomist also prepares specimens for analysis by processing orders via HIS/LIS computers, verifying specimen acceptability and performing established pre‑analytical procedures in accordance with laboratory policy in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.

Essential Job Statements
  • Verifies patient identification in accordance with VCU Health System Policy.
  • Independently performs phlebotomy collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups (neonates to geriatrics).
  • Collects non‑blood specimens such as urines, stools, and sputum for testing.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.
  • Administers oral solutions according to laboratory testing procedures.
  • Stocks supplies daily as needed.
  • Performs data entry of test orders into the computer system.
  • Processes specimens according to standard operating procedures.
  • Will be required to take call after hours and weekends on a scheduled basis based on primary site requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Employment Qualifications
  • Required Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred Education: Completion of a phlebotomy or medical assistant training program.
Licensing / Certification
  • Required: N/A.
  • Preferred: Certification as a Phlebotomist from ASCP or other recognized certification agency.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 0‑3 Years experience.
  • May require weekend and/or holiday rotation based on primary site requirements.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred
  • Basic experience in specimen collection techniques (venipuncture, capillary collection, urine collection).
  • One year of experience in laboratory clerical and computer entry functions.
Working Conditions

Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. General office environment. May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse. May be required to use physical restraints. May be exposed to adverse weather conditions; cold, hot, dust, wind, etc. Required to car travel to off‑site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights. May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids. May have periods of constant interruptions. Prolonged periods of working alone.

Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
