Job summary

Cape Fear Valley Health is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to identify patients and collect specimens using venous or capillary methods. You will verify and label specimens accurately before they leave the patient and ensure timely transport within the specified turnaround time.

The role requires adherence to universal precautions, safety protocols, and chain of custody procedures, with involvement in training or orienting students or new staff as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Phlebotomy certification through ASCP, AMT, NHA, ACA or NCCT required.
• Possess knowledge/skill of appropriate blood collection/handling techniques.

Responsibilities

• Identifies patient and collects specimens using venous or capillary methods.
• Verifies and labels specimens prior to leaving patient.
• Transports specimens within stated turnaround times (TAT).

Major Job Functions

• Provides direction and guidance for questions and or problems referred by a non-certified phlebotomist concerning specimen acceptability, unusual or difficult draws or related problems
• Performs accurate and appropriate collection and receipt of specimens in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Follows established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety, fire safety, disasters, exposure, blood borne and airborne pathogens, hazardous materials, and chain of custody procedures.
• Assists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees
• When requested, performs duties required to cover in Phlebotomy Technical Specialist/Phlebotomy Coordinator’s absence
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education And Formal Training

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Phlebotomy certification through ASCP, AMT, NHA, ACA or NCCT required

Physical Requirements

• Interacts with patients according to the Erickson model of development
• Moderate to heavy amounts of walking

• Ability to speak plainly
• Near visual acuity, ability to discern colors
• May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
