Job summary

True North Consultants, Inc. seeking a Phlebotomist in Silver Spring, MD for a 3-month contract with possible extensions. Schedule: Mon–Fri, every other Sat, 10:30am–6:30pm. Minimum 2 years experience preferred and phlebotomy certification as required by state.

Responsibilities include blood draws, specimen labeling, proper storage, and adherence to OSHA/DEP regulations; emphasis on accuracy, procedure explanations to patients, and routine trainings.

Qualifications

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the employing state as required in some states.
• Minimum 5 years of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• High school diploma or GED is required.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label and centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
• Collect and store specimens per established procedures.
• Explain venipuncture process clearly and courteously to patients.
• Demonstrate phlebotomy technique using straight or butterfly needles.
• Understand physicians' orders and match requisitions to tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as test orders require.
• Verify test requisitions against scripts for 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and store per protocol; follow OSHA/DEP rules.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer calls and relay laboratory results as needed.

Description:

Summary:

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, trouble shooting, training and making work flow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities:

• Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
• Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
• Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required
• Demonstrate technique/s using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.
• Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
• Check all test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure 100% correct.
• Package specimens for transport
• Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific to protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings
• Answer telephone calls, read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed as required in some states
• Minimum of 5 work experience performing venipunctures in a fast paced lab or hospital settingProficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
