Qualifications

Description


The Phlebotomist 2 is responsible for collecting and processing blood specimens in accordance with hospital and laboratory policies, as well as all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role ensures accurate labeling, documentation, and timely routing of specimens to the correct laboratory to maintain order accuracy and workflow efficiency. Under the direction of the Phlebotomist Lead, the Phlebotomist II supports efficient lab operations by maintaining inventory, removing expired supplies, and promoting patient safety and engagement. The phlebotomist explains procedures to patients, responds to clinical inquiries, and assists with patient outreach as needed. The role requires strong communication skills and the ability to recognize and report changes in patient condition. The Phlebotomist 2 is also knowledgeable in point-of-care (POC) equipment and may perform EKGs as requested to support comprehensive patient care.


Essential Functions:

  • Collects blood specimens using proper techniques and in compliance with all hospital, laboratory, and regulatory standards.

  • Accurately labels all samples and ensures they are routed to the correct laboratory for proper processing and order accuracy.

  • Maintains an efficient lab schedule, ensuring accuracy of patient orders and supporting smooth workflow throughout the shift.

  • Manages lab inventory by monitoring supply levels, removing expired items, and restocking materials to prevent care disruptions.

  • Explains blood draw procedures to patients and addresses questions to ensure comfort, understanding, and engagement in care.

  • Communicates effectively with clinical staff and providers regarding patient needs, specimen concerns, or changes in patient condition.

  • Identifies and escalates any changes in patient condition to appropriate clinical personnel to ensure patient safety.

  • Operates and understands all point-of-care testing equipment and performs requested EKGs accurately and safely.

  • Documents all patient interactions, specimen information, and testing details in accordance with established procedures.

  • Follows all emergency and safety protocols, ensuring a positive patient experience and a safe care environment

  • Initiates chart preparation at least 14 days prior to patient's lab appointment and confirm lab matches the preferred lab as specific by the patient's insurance or practice site standards. Review orders to determine if orders are present and communicate with clinical team to place orders per practice site standards.

  • Knowledge to change correct orders according to the patient's insurance or practice standards.

  • Follow phlebotomy Rooming by releasing the lab order(s) to print the order requisition and labels, verifying that the correct patient labels have been printed by comparing patient identity against printed requisition and labels. Have patient verbally confirm. Packaging and storing specimens according to organizational standards and resulting lab requirements After service is completed, document procedure using departmental SmartPhrase, sign the note, add appropriate charges, and close the patient’s encounter.
