Job summary

Lehigh Valley Health Network in the Lehigh Valley region is seeking a phlebotomy technician to perform venipunctures, capillary draws, EKGs, and DNA collections, handling routine test ordering and clerical duties.

You will process specimens, label and track samples, and liaise with LVHN-Pocono and other centers while delivering compassionate patient care. A High School Diploma or GED, basic computer skills, and PA driver’s license are required, with training provided.

  • Clarifies orders and pre-analytical test requirements.
  • Performs LIS and HIS data entry for all blood and body fluids.
  • Obtains specimens from hospital, outpatient areas, and ER.
  • Responds to inquiries about specimen requirements and schedules.
  • Handles heavy workload, multitasks, and may work extended hours.
  • Maintains safety and PPE compliance.

Summary

Performs a variety of patient services such as: Phlebotomy, EKG, and DNA collections on a routine and STAT basis as required. Performs a wide variety of test ordering and clerical duties as required. Performs specimen processing to include: - accessioning of orders, processing of clinical specimens in preparation for departing to HNL processing facility. Projects a positive image of the Medical Center with a focus on patient care and customer relations. Serves as a liaison between LVHN- Pocono and its counterparts/customers while aiding with inquires or concerns. .

Job Duties
  • Performs venipunctures, capillary, POCT, EKG, PKU, DUI, Drug Screen and DNA collections for all age groups, at all Patient Care Service Centers and Diagnostic locations.
  • Positively identifies each patient prior to collection of specimens, using defined laboratory protocol.
  • Accurately labels all specimens collected for testing.
  • Processes, prepares and stores all specimens for transport, in accordance with laboratory handbook and departmental SOP requirement.
  • Clarifies orders and pre-analytical test requirements when required.
  • Reviews tests already requisitioned for accuracy, prior to processing and releasing for transport, while logging courier calls and contacts courier for specimen pick ups.
  • Performs LIS data entry and HIS data entry for all blood and body fluids.
  • Obtains blood and body fluid specimens from hospital, outpatient drawing areas and emergency rooms, according to written policies.
  • Utilizes all appropriate programs, systems, applications and assigned laboratory equipment.
  • Responds to customer and client inquires/questions for information regarding specimen requirements, testing schedules, hospital and departmental operations.
  • Handles a heavy workload, while working alone or extended hours, as necessary; FLEX. While having the ability to multitask, prioritize and keep organized.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED and 1 year or
  • Proficient computer skills required.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices and regulation of blood drawing techniques and collection.
  • Course work or previous medical terminology experience.
  • Good interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and providers.
  • Ability to build comprehensive reports and effectively convey information to others.
  • Knowledge of safety guidelines, utilization of proper PPE and sanitization processes.
  • Must successfully complete appropriate training and achieve proficiency at the end of 90 days.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania within 90 Days
  • DL - Driver's License_PA - State of Pennsylvania
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical School Diploma Successful completion of an approved phlebotomy training course or 1-year previous work experience as a phlebotomist.
  • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification - State of Pennsylvania or
  • PBT - Phlebotomy Laboratory Technician ASCP - State of Pennsylvania
Physical Demands

Lift and carry 25 lbs. frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, *patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
