Job summary

Cogdell Memorial Hospital in Snyder, TX seeks a Phlebotomist to perform venipunctures and skin punctures, collect specimens for the clinical laboratory and participate in performance improvement activities. Full-time and PRN shifts including nights and weekends are available.

Responsibilities include proper specimen collection from patients of all ages, handling urine samples for DOT/non-DOT testing, documenting collection details and using hospital software for orders and results.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Phlebotomy certification is preferred.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood specimens from patients of all ages efficiently and professionally.
  • Collect urine specimens for DOT and non-DOT drug collections.
  • Utilize laboratory software for entering requisitions, ordering tests, retrieving results, and faxing results.
  • Document collection date, time, ICD codes, ABN signatures and orders.
  • Answer and screen telephone calls; route messages and provide information as required.
  • Maintain required continuing education hours.
  • Achieve first-stick blood collection success rate over 90%.
  • Label specimens with patient information, date, time and initials; identify sample source for bacteriology.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area; restock phlebotomy trays daily and clean surfaces.
  • Observe infection control procedures (gloves, protective clothing, etc.).

Description

Performs venipunctures and skin punctures competently expediently. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements, assists in Clinical Laboratory as needed. Responsibilities include bleeding time tests, blood cultures, blood samples. Participates in performance improvement activities.

Fulltime and PRN positions available (to include nights and weekends)

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School graduate or equivalent required
  • Certification as a phlebotomist preferred
  • Previous phlebotomy experience preferred but not required
Role and Responsibilities:
  • Properly collects blood specimens from patients of all ages in an efficient and professional manner.
  • Properly collects urine specimens for DOT and non-DOT drug collections and patients.
  • Utilizes the laboratory computer and various hospital software programs for entering patient requisitions, ordering tests, retrieving test results, faxing results, etc.
  • Properly documents and verifies that the laboratory request slip includes collection date, time and initials, ICD codes, ABN signatures and signed orders.
  • Answers and screen telephone calls in a courteous manner, according to department practices; takes messages and routes/directs calls to proper party; provides requested information/report results as required.
  • Maintains required continuing education hours.
  • Can collect a blood sample on the first stick over 90% of the time.
  • Appropriately labels specimen tubes and samples with name/patient information, collection date and time and initials; labels source for bacteriology specimens.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area by; cleaning, stocking/restocking phlebotomy trays on a daily basis and cleaning desk, work surfaces and equipment.
  • Observes and complies with infection control procedures (wears gloves, protective clothing, etc.)
Professional Requirements:
  • Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat, clean and professional.
  • Completes annual educational requirements.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Completes inservices and returns in a timely manner.
  • Attends staff meetings; reads and returns all staff meeting minutes.
  • Maintains employee confidentiality at all times.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Participates in the department's performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.
  • Attends mandatory meetings held within the department.
  • Adjust work hours/schedule to meet the needs and demands of the department and hospital.
  • Aware of all Emergency Disaster Plans and how to respond if a Disaster occurs.
  • Works effectively with others, demonstrates leadership and teaching ability and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Appreciation of and desire to be part of a health care team dedicated to providing patients optimal care.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic Microsoft computer skills or the ability to learn such skills required
