Qualifications

  • High School or GED Diploma required.
  • Completion of approved phlebotomy training course, or 6 months phlebotomy experience.
  • Certification as a phlebotomist from AMT, ASCP, ASPT, NHA, or NPA.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and processes patient blood via venipuncture or capillary puncture.
  • Identify patients accurately and record information on specimens.
  • Deliver specimens to the correct laboratory department promptly.
  • Provide phone support for patient care areas in a polite, supportive manner.
  • Maintain competency with hospital information systems and SOPs.
  • Train new teammates or students in department processes.
  • Adhere to PPE usage, regulatory requirements, and performance improvement activities.

Performs duties that supports the efficient workflow of the laboratory. Sets the standard for the department regarding following standards, maintaining regulatory requirements, and modeling expected behaviors within the department. Duties include obtaining patient specimens via venipuncture or micro method.

Major Responsibilities
  • Collects and/or processes patient blood obtained by venipuncture and/or capillary puncture in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Use of vacutainer tube, butterflies, syringes, and needle for drawing blood. Use of micro lancets and capillary pipettes in obtaining blood specimens by heel stick.
  • Performs Positive Patient identification by verifying the patient’s name and date of birth against lab orders and accurately record it onto the specimen.
  • Determines proper container type.
  • Promptly draws and delivers blood specimens to the appropriate laboratory department.
  • Provides phone support for patient care areas in a polite and supportive manner.
  • Maintains competency with hospital and laboratory information systems as needed to perform job duties.
  • Trains new teammates and/or students in the department including any standard work processes applicable to the work area.
  • Always wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate while working with patient specimens.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings, projects and/or performance improvement activities in the department.
  • Adheres to regulatory requirements and to standard operating procedures.
  • Completes annual system, facility and department requirements as assigned.
  • Is accountable for work, behavioral expectations, teamwork, and reliability.
  • Reports to supervisor any problems, which might adversely affect his/her ability to perform duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required
  • Certification as a phlebotomist by one of the following approved certifying agencies: AMT, ASCP, ASPT, NHA, or NPA. Must have a state of Georgia drivers license.
Education Required
  • Must be a High School or GED Diploma Graduate. Completion of approved phlebotomy training course, or 6 months phlebotomy experience in hospital or other patient care setting

  • Completion of approved phlebotomy training course, or 6 months phlebotomy experience in hospital or other patient care setting.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of phlebotomy services.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Working irregular hours including call hours
  • Physically demanding, high-stress environment
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
  • Pushing and pulling heavy objects
  • Position requires light to moderate work with 50 pounds maximum weight to lift and carry.
  • Position requires reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing.
