Responsibilities

• Select veins and perform venipuncture, capillary punctures, or finger sticks as appropriate
• Verify patient identity using two identifiers to prevent misidentification
• Review requisitions to determine the order of draw
• Label blood tubes at bedside with patient data, time, and initials
• Explain procedures to calm patients and maintain a compassionate bedside manner
• Follow aseptic techniques and infection control protocols
• Bandage puncture sites and monitor for adverse reactions
• Centrifuge, separate, and store samples per protocol
• Clean stations, check expiration dates, and restock carts

Position Summary: We're seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to join the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Memphis VA Medical Center. In this role, you'll perform precise blood collections and pre-analytical procedures, ensuring accurate patient identification, specimen integrity, and a positive patient experience for the Veterans of the Memphis area and Mid-South.

Key Responsibilities:

• Select appropriate veins and perform precise venipuncture, capillary punctures, or finger sticks based on patient age and condition
• Verify patient identity using at least two unique identifiers to prevent misidentification errors
• Review laboratory requisitions to understand test requirements and determine the correct order of draw
• Label collected blood tubes immediately at the bedside with exact patient data, collection time, and initials
• Explain procedures clearly to calm nervous patients, manage needle phobias, and maintain a compassionate bedside manner
• Follow strict aseptic techniques and infection control protocols to minimize contamination and needle-stick risks
• Bandage puncture sites, monitor patients for adverse reactions such as fainting, and provide post-draw care instructions
• Centrifuge, separate, and store samples at required temperatures before routing to the testing department
• Clean draw stations, monitor expiration dates on collection tubes, and restock mobile carts and blood draw trays

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR) preferred, but not mandatory
• Minimum of 1 year of phlebotomy experience
