Job summary

Education and/or Experience

  • The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to applycommon sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time; stoop; walk; sit; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to corrosive chemicals, infectious agents, handling glassware, needles and handling unpleasant specimens such as stool and urine. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and risk of radiation. Tasks that are routinely performed may involve possible contact with blood and other body fluid and cleaning up of contaminated areas, handling waste, specimen accessioning, specimen collection, specimen handling/transport, specimen shipping, venipuncture, skin puncture, and making blood smears.

  • Collects blood specimens from hospital inpatients and outpatients.

  • Collects other typesof specimens frompatients.

  • Maintains inventory of supplies.

  • Other tasks and responsibilities as directed.
