Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a PhD-level data scientist with expertise in machine learning to join multidisciplinary teams supporting defense and national security applications. You will contribute to model and algorithm selection, experimentation, and results presentation, and you will work across data collection, processing, and analysis to evaluate system performance.

Applicants must be eligible for Interim Secret clearance and eventually Top Secret, and

Qualifications

• PhD in Data Science, Statistics, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field.
• Experience with ML libraries (PyTorch, TensorFlow) and adapting methods for domain-specific problems.
• Ability to obtain Interim Secret clearance with potential to reach Top Secret; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to develop data collection, processing, and analysis to evaluate system performance.
• Lead the full research and development lifecycle: model selection, experiments, analysis, and presentation of results.
• Apply ML expertise to select modeling approaches for supervised, unsupervised, or RL problems in research or real-world settings.
• Contribute to future research directions through internal funding opportunities.
• Communicate technical knowledge clearly through papers and presentations to technical staff and government decision makers.
