Job summary

Formlabs in Somerville, MA is offering a PhD Intern - Materials Science for Summer 2027. You will work in the Materials lab alongside the team, developing and testing novel materials for new 3D printing applications.

The role requires hands-on wet-lab work, polymer experience, CAD proficiency (SolidWorks), and some programming in Python. This paid internship includes on-site lunches, access to 3D prints, and a collaborative intern cohort.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a PhD in materials science or a related field.
• Hands-on wet-lab experience in polymer systems.
• Familiarity with polymer characterization and material testing.

Responsibilities

Materials development presents one of the greatest opportunities in 3D printing. As a Materials intern, you’ll work side‑by‑side in the lab with the rest of our Materials team. You’ll get an opportunity to constantly develop, formulate, and test materials that we’ve never printed with before -- and every experiment plays a big role in how we solve new challenges in 3D printing.

Compensation

Interns at Formlabs are paid on a bi‑weekly pay schedule. The pay range for this role will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, location and expected impact on the organization. This is a salaried role, so you will always be paid based on the assumed 40 hours per week as a full‑time intern. This position does not offer housing or relocation assistance.

The weekly pay range for this role is:

$1,500 - $1,900 USD
