Job summary

Atlassian seeks a PhD Research Intern to join our Machine Learning Research team in the Enterprise AI space. You will work on large language models, generative AI, and AI optimization with researchers and engineers across disciplines.

The 12‑week internship (May/June – August/September 2027) is preferred to be co‑located in Seattle or within the Pacific Timezone, with virtual interviews for all applicants and a focus on impactful, publishable research.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• PhD candidate in Computer Science or related field; degree completion date cannot be earlier than Sep 2026 - Jun 2027.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate cross‑functionally with Research Scientists and ML Engineers to design, implement, evaluate experiments advancing ML/LLM performance, efficiency, and scalability.
• Curate, preprocess, and manage large datasets for training and evaluation with data quality and reproducibility in mind.
• Conduct continued training, fine‑tuning, and alignment of large language models for specialist applications such as conversational AI, summarization, and multimodal agents.
• Evaluate cutting‑edge ML algorithms through rigorous experimentation and provide analyses of performance, failure modes, and improvement opportunities.
• Contribute to publications and presentations at internal workshops or top-tier academic venues to drive Enterprise AI innovations.
