Job Description

The Pharmacy Technician functions under the direction supervision of a Pharmacist, assisting in the performance of the pharmacy daily routine. The Technician assists in the safe, accurate and efficient distribution of pharmaceutical agents to designated areas of the hospital. All activities of the Pharmacy Technician will be carried out in accordance with all state/federal and DEA regulations, TJC standards, and hospital/departmental policies and procedures. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: transport of pharmaceuticals, preparation of unit dose exchange systems, inventory and stocking, ordering of supplies and preparation of IV admixtures.

Primary responsibilities for a Pharmacy Technician encompass but not intended to be all-inclusive;

• Patient Rights - Demonstrating awareness and respect for the patient/family/significant others dignity and values; identifies cultural and religious needs, emotional and language barriers, physical, cognitive, psychological and educational limitations. Knowledgeable of patient's rights, consents, protection of patient security, privacy and confidentiality in all aspects of care.
• Job Responsibility - Assists the pharmacist in filling medication orders according to hospital policies, procedures and protocols. Responsible for drug inventory as it relates to the following; Delivery of medication and supplies to the nursing units, stocking and storage of inventory, receives and checks new deliveries and invoices. Demonstrates knowledge of and accuracy in preparation of IV admixtures according to guidelines. Assists the pharmacist in preparing medication orders accurately based on age, weight and/or body surface. Knowledgeable of documentation systems utilized to chart procedures and supply acquisition.

STANDARD VI - Age Specific Essential Performance Criteria

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned position. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training or experience.
