Job Description

The Pharmacy Technician (Non-Sterile Compounding) assists pharmacists in dispensing and distributing compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) and non-sterile drug products.

Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist and following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and USP guidelines, the technician prepares non-sterile drug products to ensure medications are ready and available for patient administration. The technician maintains accurate records and is expected to train and become fully proficient in non-sterile compounding within six months.

Responsibilities

• Prepare non-sterile drug products under pharmacist supervision following SOPs and USP guidelines.
• Handle all types of pharmaceuticals (hazardous and non-hazardous, controlled and non-controlled) for non-sterile preparations.
• Maintain accurate records of products prepared according to documentation guidelines.
• Follow procedures for documentation in electronic health records or similar systems.
• Maintain a clean and safe environment for drug manipulation.
• Assist pharmacist in filling patient-specific medication orders and prescriptions by pulling items and ensuring medication readiness for delivery.
• Document work performed throughout compounding and medication delivery in systems such as EPIC, DoseEdge, Omnicell.
• Distribute compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) and non-sterile drug products to designated patient floor areas.
• Maintain and store inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies under proper storage conditions and security.
• Receive and scan incoming medication orders from wholesalers and supply chain; handle associated paperwork.
• Restock medications and supplies; rotate stock to use first-expiring items and prevent shortages.
• Discard expired drugs in accordance with department procedures.
• Accurately document pertinent information including physical counts, expiration dates, and beyond-use dates.
• Communicate with pharmacy purchasing team regarding inventory.
• Assist pharmacy managers with the organization of controlled substance records and investigations.
• Execute required documentation of controlled substances per federal, state, and Connecticut Children’s SOPs.
• Maintain other operational records as required by department, state, or federal policies.
• Assist customers by answering calls and greeting them at the pharmacy window.
• Retrieve orders for pickup.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

• Required: High School Diploma, GED, or higher education completing high school.
• Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in a healthcare-related field.
• Preferred: Some experience as a Pharmacy Technician (not required).

License and Certification

Required:

• State of Connecticut Pharmacy Technician license.

Preferred:

• PTCB certification.
