Job summary

Manages the day-to-day activities of the pharmacy technicians in the pharmacy. A Brief Overview

Manages the day-to-day activities of the pharmacy technicians in the pharmacy. Plans and coordinates with appropriate oversight by the director of pharmacy the drug preparation and distribution from the central pharmacy. Supervises the orientation, training, and completion of competency assessments of all pharmacy technicians. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.


What you will do


  • Leadership & Direction Manages daily operations for medication preparation and distribution functions in the assigned pharmacy area(s). Plans, coordinates, and directs activities to ensure sufficient quantity of medications, supplies, and staff to meet the standards of care. Manages the activities of pharmacy technicians and interns; monitors performance, clarifies work expectations, establishes goals and promotes cooperation among individuals and groups. Plans and schedules work ensuring distribution of assignments and adequate staffing based on workload and productivity standards. Performs the duties of a Pharmacy Technician as needed. Develops and implements processes through orientation, training and education to ensure that the competence of all staff members is assessed, maintained, improved and demonstrated. Provides advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, technical assistance, and instruction to pharmacy technicians. Responsible for maintenance and appearance of assigned operational areas including inventory, work areas, and equipment.

  • Business Planning/Financial Supports business plans and strategies for pharmacy practice, assists with goal setting, and translates goals into operational tactics at the service level. Responsible for basic operational reports and analyses for the department; makes recommendations or draws conclusions from operational data. Develops and monitors expense budgets in assigned laboratory area, authorizes expenditures. Assists in the development and implementation of capital budget and plans to control costs and improve department operations. Monitors services to ensure effective use of resources and assess needs for staff, equipment, and services based on actual or projected utilization.

  • Quality/Regulatory Implements and monitors quality control programs to ensure safe medication storage and compliance with federal and regulatory standards. Prepares and maintains records and documentation. Reviews and maintains departmental standard operating procedures ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and readiness. Monitors trends by analyzing departmental procedures; identifies opportunities for operational efficiencies and quality of services provided. Assists with development and maintenance of performance standards to include quality assessment/improvement programs. Identifies and evaluates safety and risk management issues; intervenes and problem solves as required.

  • Collaboration/Working Relationships Ensures good working relationships between departments; serves as a resource and liaison for problem solving related to pharmacy services. Establishes relationships with key internal and external customers and service providers. Investigates and coordinates resolution of service delivery problems or conflicts; formulates plans for resolution, follows-up to ensure effective resolution, and determines level of satisfaction. Actively serves on assigned committees as pharmacy representative.


Education/Formal Training Requirements


  • Required - High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Preferred - Bachelor's Degree

  • Preferred - Technical Degree or Diploma Pharmacy Technician


Work Experience Requirements


  • Required - Pharmacy technician 3-5 years

  • Preferred - Supervisory or Management 5-7 years


Licenses and Certifications Requirements


  • Required - Pharmacy Technician - Tennessee - Tennessee Board of Pharmacy

  • Required - Certified Pharmacy Technician - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board

  • Preferred - Pharmacy Technician - Mississippi - Mississippi Board of Pharmacy

  • Preferred - Certified Pharmacy Technician- ExCPT - National Healthcareer Association

  • Understands and interprets complex written materials and technical reports.

  • Effective communicate skills to work with all levels of Associates, management, physicians, and patients and their families.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to consistently exercise sound judgment and initiative in a wide range of circumstances.

  • An effective planner with strong skills in scheduling and organizing work flows.

  • Must be flexible to accommodate for any pharmacy technician needs.


Supervision Provided by this Position


  • Directly supervises Pharmacy Technicians and pharmacy interns.


Physical Demands


  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.

  • Must have good balance and coordination.

  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently. The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.

  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.

  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.

  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
