Job summary

UPMC Shadyside is hiring a full-time Night Shift Pharmacy Technician to support the inpatient pharmacy team. The technician provides sterile and nonsterile preparation, packaging and labeling, medication filling and distribution while complying with health regulations.

A sign-on bonus is offered for a 2-year commitment. Must meet state and hospital requirements and assist with investigational drugs as needed.

Qualifications

  • Completion of high-school diploma or equivalent OR completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program and two years of pharmacy technician experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare cytotoxic and hazardous drugs using aseptic technique for patients.
  • Prepare oral and injectable medications including IV admixtures for correct patients.
  • Fill medication orders with proper labeling, counting, and stocking.
  • Maintain inventory, ensure hand hygiene, and follow cash-handling procedures.
  • Distribute medications and maintain controlled substance records.
  • Assist investigational drug procurement, storage, preparation and distribution.

Job Overview

UPMC Shadyside is hiring a full‑time Night Shift Pharmacy Technician to support the inpatient pharmacy team.

The Pharmacy Technician, Intermediate provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by demonstrating proficiency in essential technician functions such as sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, packaging and labeling, medication filling, and medication distribution. The Technician must comply with Department of Health mandates, Joint Commission standards, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.

Sign‑On Bonus

$5,000 with a 2‑year commitment to UPMC.

Responsibilities
Filling
  • Prepare cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g., chemotherapy) using aseptic technique.
  • Prepare oral and injectable medications, including IV admixtures and TPN, for the correct patients.
  • Fill medication orders with proper labeling, counting, and stocking.
General
  • Maintain inventory levels in pharmacy stock rooms, medication carousels, and dispensing machines.
  • Ensure proper hand hygiene in the pharmacy and medical units.
  • Finalize sales and follow cash‑handling procedures.
  • Store medications securely per regulations.
  • Train pharmacy personnel and students.
  • Comply with federal and state laws such as HIPAA and OSHA.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Provide and receive information to and from hospital personnel, patients, and visitors.
  • Maintain patient information, records, and pharmacy computer systems.
  • Keep documentation such as eye‑wash logs and refrigerator logs.
  • Audit and maintain controlled substance records.
Distribution
  • Retrieve and return discontinued medications.
  • Distribute medications, including cassettes, emergency carts, and controlled substances.
  • Develop positive service relationships during medication distribution.
Investigational
  • Assist with investigational and study drugs' procurement, storage, preparation, and distribution.

Qualifications
