Job summary

University of California - San Francisco seeks a Pharmacy Technician 2 to support pharmaceutical care across UCSF Health locations. Responsibilities include sterile compounding, chemotherapy preparation, and inventory control under pharmacist supervision.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform chemotherapy, investigational drugs, monoclonal antibodies, vaccines and sterile compounds in PEC environments per USP 797/800.
• Maintain and optimize dispensing and delivery machines to ensure medication availability.
• Maintain pharmacy programs and software used for production and fulfillment.
• Assist staff with computer databases, data entry and software tasks.
• Oversee inventory including cycle counts, recalls, and ordering from wholesalers; manage 340B needs.
• Maintain accurate drug inventory records and reference materials for hazardous drugs and sterile compounding.
• Provide pharmaceutical care under licensure and interact with clinicians, nurses, patients and families.
• Keep competencies current on sterile and hazardous compounding and USP standards.

Job description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides a full range of services for patients cared for by the UCSF Medical Center and its providers and payors. These services include, but are not limited to: drug procurement, storage, and security; safe, accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the Medical Center; drug information services for clinicians and patients; and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs. The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is affiliated with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic department within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.D. curriculum, clinical research, and public and clinical service.

The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Services share their philosophy of pharmaceutical care. Under the direction of Pharmaceutical Services, the Pharmacy Technician 2/Pharmacy Technician 2 PD provides pharmaceutical care to patients across pharmacy locations within the UCSF Health System and delivers specialized services to campus-based research operations. While the position may be primarily assigned to a designated site, incumbents are required to demonstrate flexibility to work at all UCSF Health locations, as operational needs dictate. All Pharmacy Technicians are accountable to the supervising or operating pharmacist who is legally responsible by virtue of state licensure for the care and safety of patients served by Pharmaceutical Services. The Pharmacy Technician 2 performs all activities related to medication preparation, medication distribution, and inventory management.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Identify the functions or tasks that employees in the job perform. • Perform duties in infusion pharmacies including preparation, distribution, and control of chemotherapy, investigational drug, monoclonal antibody, vaccines, and sterile compounds in primary engineering control (PEC) environments in accordance with USP 797/800 guidelines.
• Maintain and/or expedite the services of the pharmaceutical dispensing machines and delivery machines as warranted to ensure adequate service and delivery of medications.
• Maintain high level understanding and utilization of pharmacy programs and software associated with production and medication fulfillment.
• Assist other staff with computer database, data entries, and other software information.
• Oversee medication inventory management, including performing cycle counts, conducting appropriate outdates and recalls, and ordering medications from wholesaler as needed. Optimize and analyze drug supply needs according to patient census and 340B program. Seek solutions for back ordered drugs and supplies and communicate to the team.
• Maintain accurate records for drug inventory according to policy and procedures.
• Maintain current reference information for hazardous drug and sterile compounding policy and procedures.
• Provide pharmaceutical care according to licensure and interact with nurses, physicians, other health care providers, patients and/or patient families.
• Maintain all competencies related to sterile and hazardous compounding and current professional knowledge of relevant best practices, USP797/800 guidelines, and healthcare trends.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Completion of a recognized/accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program (includes hands-on training period during externship), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum two (2) years' experience as a Pharmacy Technician in hospitals or health care, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

• Pharmacy Technician Certification CPhT
• Preferred candidates with at least two years of I.V. Additives experience
• Knowledge of USP 797/800 standards, hazardous and aseptic IV techniques for sterile compounding
• Knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint software programs, Pyxis machine, and Primary Engineering Control (PEC)

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

• Licensed Pharmacy Technician by the California Board of Pharmacy and in good standing.
