Job summary

Duke Health in Durham, NC is seeking a Pharmacy Technician II- Medication History to join the on-site team in a full-time day shift.

You will conduct medication history interviews, support transitions of care, restock cabinets, manage medication records, and assist the clinical pharmacist while ensuring regulatory compliance. A $2,500 commitment bonus is offered to newly hired team members.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with accredited pharmacy technician-training program, or acceptance into pharmacy school, or high school diploma with one year of pharmacy/healthcare related experience.
  • Minimum of one year of related experience.
  • North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required.
  • Pharmacy Technician certification is required from PTCB or ExCPT.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately follow workflow procedures including prescription processing, medication preparation and distribution to patients.
  • Restock automatic dispensing cabinets and anesthesia workstations as needed.
  • Answer and screen telephone calls and route to appropriate personnel.
  • Handle medications in accordance with department, regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy team, insurers and customers to resolve issues and ensure timely resolutions.
  • Assist with clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., patient follow up calls).
  • Operate specialty machinery and retail pharmacy systems safely.
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care areas.
  • Prepare IV solutions using aseptic technique where required.
  • Train new employees and students in job-specific functions.

General Description of the Job Class

The Continuity of Care pharmacy technician is a self-motivated, independent pharmacy technician responsible for working collaboratively with the Transitions of Care Manager within the Clinical and Patient Care Services division to perform medication history interviews for patients at Duke University Hospital.

  • This individual performs, under supervision, a variety of duties in accordance to department procedures, which may be related to the procurement, preparation, distribution and storage of drugs, as well as, provision of clinical pharmacy services according to the Pharmacy's role in ensuring safe medication use.
  • Individuals eligible for pharmacy technician level II are competent in all tasks associated with pharmacy technician level I and have achieved the area specific advanced competency requirements. Pharmacy technician level II staff must achieve and maintain certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
  • To accurately and efficiently follow workflow procedures including prescription processing, medication preparation and distribution to patient.
  • Restock automatic dispensing cabinets and anesthesia workstations as needed
  • Answer and screens telephones calls and directs calls to appropriate personnel when needed.
  • Handle medications in accordance to department, regulatory and legal requirements (e.g., medication records, pulling outdated/unusable medications).
  • Collaborates with immediate pharmacy team, insurance companies and customers alike to resolve issues, ensure accuracy and deliver a timely resolution of any medication or insurance related concern.
  • Assist with a variety of basic clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow up calls).
  • Efficient operation and basic level of technical support for specialty machinery, equipment, devices or software necessary in performing job functions (e.g., carousels, automated dispensing cabinets, compounders, drug delivery devices, retail pharmacy systems).
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas.
  • Complete and document all assigned safety and quality activities in compliance with department procedures.
  • Prepare IV solutions using aseptic technique and/or compound non-sterile medications at select locations.
  • Manage individual responsibilities while supporting team members and contributing to broader team goals.
  • Perform a variety of clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., patient interviews, medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow up calls, collection of clinical data for the pharmacist).
  • Efficient operation and ability to troubleshoot specialty machinery, equipment, devices or software as necessary in performing job functions (e.g., carousels, automated dispensing cabinets, compounders, drug delivery devices, retail pharmacy systems).
  • Manage individual responsibilities while being able to shift to help team members and contribute to broader team goals with minimum supervision.
  • Assist with training of new employees and students, educating them in job-specific functions.
  • Perform other related duties incidental as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program. or Acceptance into pharmacy school. or High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or health care related experience.
Experience
  • Minimum of one year of related experience.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
  • North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required.
