Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA, is seeking an experienced Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I to support sterile and nonsterile compounding, medication delivery, and automated dispensing operations. You will work under a pharmacist, maintain regulatory documentation, and ensure accurate medication preparation for adult and pediatric patients.

The role requires MA Board of Pharmacy licensure, PTCB/ExCPT certification, and 3 years of experience with aseptic technique.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; active license with MA Board of Pharmacy.
  • PTCB or ExCPT certification required; sterile compounding program/USP 797/800 training expected.
  • 3 years of experience; proficient with math, computers and following instructions.
  • Must be capable of working in an inpatient pharmacy and within regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares IV drugs using aseptic technique for parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapy and other IV drugs.
  • Maintains documentation per regulatory and hospital requirements; protects patient confidentiality.
  • Performs major responsibilities of an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I.
  • Complies with all state and federal standards for compounding medications.
  • Prepares sterile parenteral products from orders; creates adult/pediatric nutrition formulations.
  • Maintains inventory and orders supplies for sterile compounding and IV area.
  • Maintains certification standards in aseptic technique; uses pharmacy systems for documentation.
  • Trains new technicians; supports area with monthly environmental monitoring and code cart management.

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, performs hazardous and nonhazardous sterile compounding, nonsterile compounding, delivers medications, and is responsible for refilling and loading of medications into automated dispensing machines (ADMs). Performs other medication related tasks such as packaging, preparation of oral and IV medications, record keeping, and all aspects of their distribution. Assists in the transportation and handling of controlled substances and all required documentation as related to their delivery. Maintains 50 % of time performing sterile compounding activities and/or specialized tasks, including addressing MAR messages, code cart management, controlled substance receiving/reconciliation and medication ordering.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Prepares intravenous (IV) drugs using aseptic technique in compounding parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapy and other IV drugs.
  • Maintains required documentation in accordance with regulatory and hospital requirements and maintains respect for patient confidentiality. Generates necessary pharmacy reports.
  • Performs all major responsibilities of an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I.
  • Complies with all state and federal standards for compounding medications.
  • Prepare sterile parenteral products from a patient order including additive, volume and concentration. Prepares adult, pediatric, neonatal parenteral nutrition.
  • Prepare batch preparations of sterile compounded products for high use items.
  • Maintain inventory and supplies needed for sterile compounding and order supplies for IV area.
  • Maintain standards for certification in aseptic technique.
  • Proficient with all pharmacy technology and equipment and proper use of all compounding systems.
  • Document compounded products using appropriate technology (Simplify, Epic, IMS, etc)
  • Support training new technicians in sterile compounding and other specialized tasks.
  • Monthly air and surface sampling, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates appropriate behavior in ISO classified environments (handwashing, garbing, aseptic technique).
  • Temperature/humidity monitoring (room air, refrigerators, freezers, incubators) and associated documentation.
  • Pressure monitoring and documentation.
  • Proper use and maintenance of Primary Engineering Controls.
  • Perform inspections of area and removes outdated medications and supplies.
  • Assists with yearly inventory in assigned areas.
Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current license with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
  • Certified by one of the national governing bodies such as Pharmacy Technician Certification Board PTCB, or the National Healthcareer Association ExCPT.
  • Must pass and remain competent with UMass sterile compounding program and guidelines which follow USP 797/800 standards.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
  • 3 years of previous experience.
  • Position requires proficiency in math and, knowledge and ability to use a computer.
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions with accuracy, efficiency, and dependability.
  • Positive work ethic, motivated and professional demeanor to promote teamwork in the department.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
