Allegheny Health Network is hiring a Pharmacy Technician to support the registered pharmacist in distributive services. The role includes taking prescriptions, processing orders, and assisting with inventory control and customer service.

Responsibilities span outpatient and inpatient settings, including insurance adjudication for outpatient techs and IV compounding for inpatient techs, with emphasis on safety and regulatory compliance within a large health system.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; pharmacy technician training program completed.
  • CPhT or ExCPT certification completed or in progress with PA board registration
  • Preferred 1 year of pharmacy experience in the respective area

Responsibilities

  • Maintains pharmacy inventory and supplies per policies and uses pharmacy computer systems.
  • Provides patient service by taking prescriptions and documenting required information.
  • Outpatient: validate insurance adjudication, handle cash, deposits and reports.
  • Inpatient: compounds, stocks, repackages and prepares IV admixtures and related orders.
  • Central Fill: operates equipment safely (forklifts, order pickers, reach trucks).
  • Other duties as assigned.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Provides distributive pharmacy services, assistance and support for the registered pharmacist.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Processes medication orders including computer order entry, medication preparation and assembles all items prior to pharmacist final check. (25%)
  • Maintains pharmacy inventory and supplies according to established policies and procedures, including inspection of assigned areas and use of pharmacy computer systems. (25%)
  • Provides customer service by taking patient’s prescriptions and documenting all required information, handles all customer interactions in a courteous and efficient manner, and releases medications required by policy/procedure. (25%)
  • For Outpatient Techs: Validates Medicaid, Medicare, or commercial insurance drug coverage and ensures adjudication is complete addressing any error messages, plus handles cash, prepares deposits and accounting reports. (25%)
  • For Inpatient Techs: Compounds, stocks, repackages and batches from bulk medications. Prepares routine patient orders for IV pharmaceuticals including compounding, preparation and labeling of any IV admixture including antibiotics, solutions, irrigations, narcotics, parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy (25%)
  • Central Fill Pharmacy: Safe operation of equipment assigned, including but not limited to: forklifts, order pickers, reach trucks, or other material handling equipment
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum High school diploma/GED Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or ExCPT (NHA) completion of a pharmacy technician training program or 1 year equivalent experience Effective June 28, 2026; upon hire and before start date, registration as Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician through the PA State Board of Pharmacy. Preferred 1 year of pharmacy experience in respective area.
