  • Transports medications to patient care units; places in designated delivery locations within standards.
  • IV Compounding: performs IV prep under sterile technique and maintains daily production logs per regulations.

About the Job
General Summary of Position

The Inpatient Pharmacy at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is hiring a Full Time Pharmacy Technician II. This 40 hour per week position rotates through day, mid and evening shifts with occasional night coverage.

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician II prepares and fills routine orders for prescribed medications; restocks automated dispensing machines; repackages medications; and compounds both sterile and non-sterile medications.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Safely and accurately prepares all medications in the readiest to administer form using proper techniques calculations and appropriate precautions.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the formulary list and the formulary process. Adheres to policies and procedures regarding the procurement of non-formulary medications.
  • Stores controlled substances in such a manner to prevent diversion in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations. Accounts for all unused expired or returned medications according to law. Utilizes automation where applicable.
  • Transports medication to patient care units placing in the designated delivery locations within established departmental standards for turnaround times.
  • Abides by recommendations from regulatory and advisory groups regarding safe medication principles including look alike sound alike and high alert drugs.
  • Assists pharmacists in obtaining patient specific information as appropriate for safe medication management.
  • Ensures that medications are properly and safely stored throughout the hospital.
  • IV Compounding: performs IV preparation under sterile technique packages medication for distribution and maintains daily production logs according; Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations including but not limited to State Board of Pharmacy, Joint Commission of Hospital Pharmacy and USP.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician training program required or
  • Current enrollment in a current college of pharmacy program preferred or
  • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience
Experience
  • 6 to 12 months related pharmacy technician experience preferred
  • 6 months hospital environment experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • PHRMTECH-R - Registered Pharmacy Technician through the DC Board of Pharmacy required upon hire
  • CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) National Pharmacy Technician Certification through Board of Pharmacy approved program required upon hire
  • RPI - Reg Pharmacy Intern Registered Pharmacy Student Intern through the Board of Pharmacy preferred
