Job description

Pharmacy Technician 2 Specialty Pharmacy Operations

Play a vital role in advancing how specialty medications reach patients by supporting a highly coordinated, hospital-affiliated pharmacy operation. This position sits at the center of a fast-moving system that prioritizes accuracy, efficiency, and innovation behind the scenes—ensuring that every prescription supports optimal patient outcomes without the pressures of direct retail interaction.

As a Pharmacy Technician in Specialty Pharmacy Operations, you’ll contribute to a sophisticated workflow designed to deliver high-quality pharmaceutical care through centralized operations while building advanced technical and operational expertise.

The Role

In this non‑customer facing role, you will work within a high-functioning specialty pharmacy operation, supporting prescription fulfillment, logistics, and inventory processes that directly impact patient care across UVA Health. The environment is structured yet dynamic, offering both independence and collaborative teamwork.

An average day blends technical precision, operational awareness, and proactive problem‑solving:

  • Accurately prepare and fill specialty prescriptions within a centralized workflow
  • Support packaging and shipping logistics, ensuring timely and compliant delivery through carrier systems such as UPS and vendor networks
  • Manage and maintain inventory levels, including tracking, replenishment, and organization of medications and supplies
  • Participate in mail‑order and central fill operations, gaining exposure beyond traditional retail pharmacy practices
  • Collaborate with pharmacists, lead technicians, and peers to ensure workflow continuity and quality assurance
  • Take ownership of assigned responsibilities, identifying process gaps and implementing solutions in real time

This role stands apart from traditional pharmacy technician positions by offering:

  • No direct retail‑style customer interaction, allowing full focus on technical and operational excellence
  • A broader scope of practice across fulfillment, logistics, and systems‑based workflows
  • Opportunities to take on “captain” roles such as fill or packaging leads, fostering leadership exposure and workflow ownership
Why UVA Health

UVA Health is a nationally recognized academic health system where innovation, collaboration, and professional growth are foundational. This role is strategically positioned within a specialty pharmacy operation that continues to evolve to meet complex patient needs.

Here, your work is supported, valued, and designed for growth:

  • Academic Medical Center Excellence: Work within a system known for clinical innovation, interprofessional collaboration, and a commitment to advancing healthcare delivery
  • Non‑Retail, Operationally Driven Pharmacy Model: Experience a behind‑the‑scenes environment focused on precision, efficiency, and patient impact without direct customer‑facing pressures
  • Skill Diversification Across the Medication Journey: Build expertise in prescription fulfillment, packaging and shipping logistics, inventory systems, delivery coordination and vendor relationships—creating a more comprehensive skillset than traditional retail technician roles
  • Structured Growth and Leadership Opportunities: Engage in captain roles that provide workflow ownership, leadership development, and clear pathways for career progression within the health system
  • Autonomy with Strong Clinical Support: Benefit from a balance of independence and collaboration, with access to pharmacists, lead technicians, and operational leadership
  • Collaborative Team Environment: Join a large, team‑based structure where responsibilities are shared, communication is constant, and success is collective
  • Entry into a Health System Specialty Pharmacy Setting: Ideal for technicians looking to transition from retail into a hospital‑affiliated, specialty‑focused environment with expanded career possibilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • Experience: 6 months minimum relevant experience.
  • Licensure/Certifications: Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required. CPhT credential through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required. For team members hired prior to February 1, 2020, certification as CPhT through NHA or PTCB is required by January 31, 2022.
Physical Demands

Job requires standing for prolonged periods. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; attention to detail and ability to write legibly; ability to lift/push/pull less than 20 lbs.
