Job summary

Oceans Healthcare in Jackson, MS is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support the inpatient and outpatient pharmacy operations on site. You will assist licensed pharmacists by preparing medications, compounding where appropriate, and ensuring accurate unit-dose distribution in a fast-paced hospital setting.

Ideal candidates have at least 1 year of pharmacy experience, current state certification, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1 year of pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Current state pharmacy technician certification required.
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare medications and supplies for dispensing, including unit-dose preparation.
  • Assist in dispensing and distribution of medications.
  • Prepare inventories and stock shelves in pharmacy locations.
  • Perform quality checks and maintain workload records.
  • Transport medications and pharmacy equipment to hospitals daily.
  • Assist in training new employees as needed.
  • Prepare sterile preparations following policies.
  • Support other pharmacy staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Oceans Healthcare will expand behavioral health services in Jackson. Oceans Healthcare of Jackson, a 77-bed facility will expand inpatient capacity for adult and senior behavioral health patients and add new services, including an intensive outpatient program. The freestanding hospital will be located on the St. Dominic's campus.

Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, selects and prepares medications, pharmaceutical products, and intravenous admixtures. Assists in the dispensing and distribution of medications. Maintains pharmacy merchandise and equipment. Reviews medication cassettes for returned medication; unit doses medication; transports pharmacy merchandise. Performs other duties as required.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare medications and supplies for dispensing including: pre-packing bulk medications compounding ointments, creams, oral solutions, and other medications compounding total parenteral nutrition solutions compounding large-volume intravenous mixtures compounding small-volume IVPB mixtures preparing prescriptions for outpatients checking and unit dosing medication. Performed on a regular basis.
  • Control and audit narcotics / stock substance, on a regular basis.
  • Prepare inventories, order drugs and supplies from the storeroom, receive drugs and stock shelves in various pharmacy locations on a regular basis.
  • Perform monthly inspections, maintain workload records, and collect quality-assurance data.
  • Transport medications, drug-delivery devices, and other pharmacy equipment from the pharmacy to hospitals on a daily basis.
  • Assist in training new employees on an as needed basis.
  • Prepares sterile preparations with adherence to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist other pharmacy staff members as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned
Requirements
Educational / Experience Requirements
  • Formal Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: 1 year
  • Current state pharmacy technician certification required
  • Valid Driver’s license with safe driving record

Work Environment
  • Occupational Risks: Some portions (less than 50%) of daily assignments involve occupational risk, such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, injuries from falls, or back injury sustained with assisting in moving, lifting, or positioning patients, equipment, or materials.
  • Safety Equipment: Job does not require the use of safety equipment, such as HEPA mask, for infection prevention.
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure: OSHA Category I - Exposure not anticipated. Work does not involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue, and does not require performing unplanned exposure tasks.
  • Ergonomic Risks: Significant portions (more than 50%) of daily assignments involve ergonomic risk, such as regular repetitive tasks, forceful or prolonged exertions of the hands, vibration, cold temperatures, heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, or carrying of heavy objects, poor body mechanics, restrictive workstations, or awkward postures. Lifting: Job requires lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Climbing Stairs: Job does not require climbing stairs.
  • Manual Skills: Some portions (less than 50%) of daily assignments involve application of manual skills requiring motor coordination in combination with finger dexterity, e.g., typing or machine operations.
  • Physical Effort: Significant portions (more than 50%) of daily assignments involve prolonged standing, transporting patients, material or equipment, or lifting, moving, or carrying heavy (over 30 pounds) materials for intermittent periods throughout the day.
  • Work Schedule: Work may require evening, night, holiday, or weekend assignments on occasion.
  • Physical Environment: Some portions (less than 50%) of daily assignments involve exposure to dirt, odors, noise, or some work is performed with exposure to temperature / weather extremes. Working surfaces may be unleveled, slippery, or unstable.
  • Volatility of Workload: The workload required to perform this job has frequent changes, but the changes are relatively minor.
  • Travel: Significant portions (more than 50%) of daily assignments require travel to client/resident/patient locations or other work sites, via car or public transportation.
