Job summary

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to prepare and process medications, unit-dose carts, and related tasks under pharmacist direction.

You will enter orders, fill prescriptions, print profiles, and support aseptic technique validation. Strong math, English, and data-entry skills are essential in our fast-paced hospital setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Two years of college with at least one general mathematics course preferred.
• One year of pharmacy technician experience preferred.
• Licensure or eligibility for licensure as Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Illinois.
• Must be able to follow instructions accurately and be capable of following well organized work routine.
• Must be able to learn and master the procedures and techniques necessary to operate the unit-dose system.
• Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to function within a team and to interact with tact and courtesy with all hospital employees and customers.
• Must complete an annual validation of aseptic techniques including handling of multiple-dispensed sterile bulk products.
• Must have good mathematical skills to perform calculations, make dilutions and maintain records.
• Must be able to read, write and speak English. Must have computer data entry skills or ability to learn computer data entry.
• Must have good manual dexterity. Must be able to differentiate colors. Must be able to lift at least 10 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Selects and prepares medications, fills, exchanges and credits unit-dose carts and processes drug orders.
• Answers and screens phone calls.
• Prepares cytotoxic agents when necessary.
• Enters new orders under the direction of a pharmacist.
• Processes new prescriptions and refills.
• Puts cardexes in order and prints new profiles when necessary.
• Prepares labels for oral doses, injectables and large volume parenterals when necessary.
• Selects and prepares appropriate medications for new orders and outpatient prescriptions.
• Fills, exchanges and credits unit-dose carts upon authorization of a pharmacist.
• Notifies pharmacists of returned doses and returns usable stock to inventory.
• Stocks shelves and notes low stock items; prepacks bulk medication as needed.
• Inspects stock for proper storage and dating.
• Maintains department appearance; screens calls and relays messages.
• Adheres to service principles emphasizing innovation, service excellence and teamwork.
