Job summary

Unity Physicians Hospital is seeking a CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN for PRN 8-hour day shifts to support pharmacy operations. You will assist in preparing and distributing medications, maintain inventory and patient/pharmacy records, and work under supervision of a licensed pharmacist in a fast-paced hospital setting.

Required is a Certified Pharmacy Technician with 2–3 years of hospital experience and Indiana license, plus ability to work independently, handle emergencies, and maintain

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparation and distribution of medications and maintain pharmacy records.
  • Maintain drug inventory and ensure stock is rotated and up to date.
  • Replenish emergency kits and floor stock as needed; deliver medications to patient care areas.
  • Enter patient medication orders into the pharmacy computer system and process charges/credits.
  • Maintain logs and documentation; participate in meetings and training; ensure compliance with policies and regulations.

We have an immediate need for aCERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN - PRN, (8 hour day shifts) who works in the pharmacy operations by assisting in the preparation and distribution of medications; maintaining the drug inventory; and maintaining patient and pharmacy records in a manner consistent with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations and hospital/pharmacy policies and procedures. Technician activities are performed under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

Must be aCERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN with at least 2-3 years of experience preferably in a hospital environment. Have the ability to work independently and accurately. Able to work cooperatively with all staff and providers, handle a fast-paced work environment, set priorities, solve problems, and respond quickly to emergency requests.Experience compounding both hazardous and non-hazardous medications in compliance with USP 797 and USP 800 regulations is strongly preferred

Principal Functions

The pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in the operation of the pharmacy department by assisting in the preparation and distribution of medications; maintaining the drug inventory; and maintaining patient and pharmacy records in a manner consistent with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations and hospital and pharmacy policies and procedures. Technician activities are performed under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

Position Duties
  • Assists in coordinating the collection and filling of physician orders, medication kits, medication carts, and/or stock requisitions accurately.
  • Replenishes medications in emergency kits/carts and/or floor stocks appropriately.
  • Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas per established guidelines.
  • Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.
  • Ensures stock is rotated as needed to ensure use before expiration date.
  • Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
  • Restocks medications, supplies, and IV solutions as appropriate.
  • Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas on rounds.
  • Assists in the entry of patient medication orders into the pharmacy computer system accurately.
  • Processes charges and credits for patient medications accurately.
  • Generates reports, lists, labels, etc. as required.
  • Answers the telephone and directs calls appropriately.
  • Answers inquiries/requests made in the department/hospital and responds appropriately (e.g. stat deliveries, etc.).
  • Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
  • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files documentation in appropriate locations.
  • Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills.
  • Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, well-organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment clean per department and hospital standards and procedures.
  • Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly.
  • Collects data, conducts quality monitors, and completes documentation as assigned.
  • Maintains current technician certification.
  • Attends all pharmacy staff meetings.
  • Participates in orientation, education, and training programs. Reviews literature and other materials as assigned.
  • Performs work within specified time frames. Adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule.
  • Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements (see attached competence assessment / skills list).
  • Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control. Complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations. Performs all duties under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Maintains a professional approach with confidentiality. Assures protection and privacy of health information as attained through written, electronic or oral disclosures.
  • Displays concern and initiative. Is resourceful and calm in emergencies.
  • Is prompt and efficient with minimal absences.
  • Cooperates and maintains good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, other departments, and visitors.
  • Seeks guidance and remains knowledgeable of, and complies with, all applicable federal and state laws, as well as hospital polices that apply to assigned duties.
  • Complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct.
  • Complies with federal and hospital requirements in the areas of protected health information and patient privacy.
Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Two (2) to three (3) years pharmacy technician experience preferred.

Licensure: Current Pharmacy Technician Certification or proof of working towards upon employment. Must have a valid Indiana Pharmacy Technician License.

Skills: Ability to work independently and to perform work accurately with attention to detail and within specified time periods. Ability to handle stress appropriately. Ability to work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule. Ability to set priorities, solve problems, and respond quickly to emergency requests. Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing). Ability to assist in meeting pharmaceutical care needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
