Job summary

Broadlawns Medical Center seeks an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician to assist with preparation and dispensing of medications under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. You will fill unit dose cassettes, deliver & exchange, refill cabinets, run reports, and assist with IV solutions and chemotherapy admixture.

Responsibilities include maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and timely service to patients and staff while supporting a collaborative pharmacy team.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy within 90 days of employment.
  • Typing (35 WPM) or data entry experience; computer experience.
  • Ability to interact with patients, coworkers and other medical center personnel in person or by telephone, in a pleasant, courteous manner.
  • Math aptitude with the ability to perform dosage or quantity calculations accurately.
  • Ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to consistently meet the departmental schedule as designated.
  • Successful completion of the Certified Pharmacy Technician examination within 18 months of beginning position.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers and exchanges cassettes for BMC according to pre-established delivery schedules.
  • Refills automated dispensing cabinets according to departmental policy.
  • Runs reports as requested in the automated systems.
  • Calculates compounds and delivers mixed intravenous solutions and parenteral nutrition solutions for inpatients or outpatients.
  • Admixes chemotherapy agents as assigned.
  • Provides regular delivery of medications to patient care areas.
  • Enters floor stock charges to patient profiles.
  • Processes all returned medication, enters credits to patient’s profile, returns medication to stock as appropriate.
  • Files all entered physician orders, floor stock charges and requisitions, narcotic charge slips and other paperwork in proper cabinets.
  • Signs off and files all computer generated refill lists.
  • Prepares compounded medication for dispensing, based upon calculated formulas and written physician orders.
  • As assigned by pharmacists, delivers controlled substances and paperwork to nursing units.
  • Performs work within specified time frames.
  • Adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule.
  • Provides courteous, cooperative, and timely service to patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Fosters a team environment by working cooperatively with all staff.
  • Voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient, visitor, and employee information.
  • Maintains clean work areas, including aseptic cleaning of IV hood and chemo hood as required.
  • Handles regularly scheduled special projects as requested by supervisor.
  • Completes inspection of assigned medication on a monthly basis; assists in maintaining inventory of crash cart drugs with adequate dating.
  • Assists in training new technicians, pharmacy interns and College of Pharmacy clerkship students as requested by supervisor.
  • Completes assigned work in the departmental education plan assigned to maintain competency.
  • Performs other duties in inpatient, outpatient and inventory areas as required and assigned.
  • Maintains flexible availability to meet the needs of the business.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician assists with the preparation and dispensing of medications for patients served by Broadlawns Medical Center Inpatient Pharmacy. All duties are performed under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist:

  • Fills unit dose medication cassettes for all nursing units using computer generated refill lists.
  • Delivers and exchanges cassettes for BMC according to pre-established delivery schedules.
  • Refills automated dispensing cabinets according to departmental policy.
  • Runs reports as requested in the automated systems.
  • Calculates compounds and delivers mixed intravenous solutions and parenteral nutrition solutions for inpatients or outpatients.

  • Complies with USP 797 and NIOSH policies, procedures and practices.
  • Provides regular delivery of medications to patient care areas.
  • Enters floor stock charges to patient profiles.

  • Files all entered physician orders, floor stock charges and requisitions, narcotic charge slips and other paperwork in proper cabinets.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Completes all competence assessment requirements.

Provides courteous and cooperative service to internal and external customers according to Service Excellence standards.

Completes monthly medication area inspections in a timely manner.

Demonstrates knowledge of applicable JCAHO standards to maintain departmental compliance.
