Job description

Job Summary

Assists in the procurement, storage, preparation, and distribution of medications, all under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist. The technician is also responsible for patient billing, inventory control, and other non‑discretionary tasks related to the maintenance of the Pharmacy.

General Duties
  • Selects the correct drug product from the inventory to fill patient orders and stock orders.
  • Prepares and compounds sterile parenteral pharmaceuticals and chemotherapeutic agents under the supervision of a pharmacist; prepares the appropriate labeling of these products.
  • Pre‑packs preparations as needed under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Fills floor stock requests accurately and promptly.
  • Is familiar with all aspects of the computer system, including but not limited to order entry, report generation for cart fills and IV admixture preparation, and billing entry.
  • Knowledge of the special age‑related needs of patients in the Medical Center, including:
    • Preparation of liquid unit‑dose syringes and special dosage forms for neonate patients.
    • Special dose‑form formulations for geriatric patients and comatose patients.
    • Preparation of neonatal and pediatric IV solutions and TPN solutions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of age‑specific care, including identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values, and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills, or activities that place patients at risk. Communicates effectively in a clear, concise manner. Applicable for the populations listed below:
    • Infant
    • Pediatric
    • Adult
    • Geriatric
  • Replaces working stocks of drugs, solutions, and supplies in the Pharmacy and designated storage areas throughout the Medical Center; informs the Pharmacy Buyer per established procedure; assists in the maintenance of inventory.
  • Answers telephones and takes messages, takes initial calls for requests from patient care areas; triages calls and decides which can be handled without interrupting the pharmacist.
  • Ensures that all charges are captured and billed within 72 hours.
  • Assures that charges are performed within 72 hours of the service date.
  • Has operational knowledge of the JB Dev time‑keeping system and company policy regarding time management.
Language Skills
  • Ability to communicate in English and understand verbal and written instructions.

Minimum Education: High School Graduate

Preferred Education: Completion of coursework leading to certification as a Pharmacy Technician

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation
  • Current State of California Pharmacy Technician License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Current Los Angeles County Fire Card (required within 30 days of hire)
  • Assault Response Competency (ARC) (required within 30 days of hire)
