Job summary

Abrazo Arrowhead Campus Hospital seeks a Pharmacy Technician to assist in preparing, labeling, stocking, and delivering medications under supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The role includes compounding, quality assurance activities, and ensuring compliance with USP and hospital policies.

Responsibilities include ensuring orders are verified by a pharmacist, stocking ADCs, assisting in IV compounding, training staff, and supporting performance improvement initiatives.

Job Description

The individual in this position will assist in preparing, packaging, delivering, and charging of medication orders, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Position duties include the following activities: fill and label medications, stock medications into pharmacy inventory, restock automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), maintain adequate medication stock levels and proper storage of medications, deliver medications to patient care areas, attend to medication requests and phone calls, prepare IV sterile admixture solutions and IV products. This will also include advanced compounding of chemotherapy and TPNs, assist in Pharmacy quality assurance activities, train and educate pharmacy technicians on department and hospital policies and procedures, quality assurance, and performance improvement processes, comply and assure compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements, Joint Commission standards and Tenet and hospital policies and procedures, assist pharmacists and Supervisors in performing various duties as assigned, and serve as a resource for pharmacy drug distribution functions.

Responsibilities
  • The individual's responsibilities include the following activities: a) accurately fill medication orders with correct strength, dosage form, and quantity in a timely manner, b) assure all medication orders are verified by pharmacist prior to dispensing, c) respond appropriately to requests for STAT orders, routine orders, department requests, and ADC stock out bulletins, d) process and document emergency crash carts, boxes, and kits accurately and timely, e) accurately stock ADCs in a timely manner, f) prepackage and label oral medications and extemporaneous preparations, g) prepare non-sterile compounded products accurately and consistent with hospital policies and procedures (USP 795) h) prepare sterile admixture solutions and IV products accurately consistent with sterile compounding policies and procedures (USP797) and (USP800), i) restock medications in IV room and conform to IV cleaning schedule, j) complete monthly medication inspections as assigned, k) maintain quality assurance logs with proper documentation and notify Supervisor of any deviations from standards, l) ensure efficient operational workflow in assigned area(s) and conform with delivery schedule, m) display leadership role with areas of responsibility completed and/or delegated appropriately, n) follow proper process for handling of controlled substances and report any variances to Supervisor or pharmacist-in-charge; o) ensure patient accounts are properly charged, p) assist in training and educating new pharmacy technician staff, q) aid in development and implementation of performance improvement plans, r) troubleshoot i with automated technology (dispensing and packaging), s) acts as an agent, and under the supervision, of the facility medical director while performing medication management related activities at a remote site commonly owned and operated by the Hospital. t) other duties as assigned.
  • Organization/Work Role: Prioritizes workload. Completes work in a timely manner. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. Shares responsibility for ordering and stocking medication and keeping the department clean. Maintains a calm demeanour during busy or crisis situations. Utilises personal protective equipment to protect from exposure to chemical, radiation and infectious hazards.
  • Professional: Actively participates in department management by providing input at meetings and reading communication. Mentors new and less experienced staff and students. Uses policy and procedure manuals and other reference material to ensure proper course of action.
  • Quality Improvement: Identifies, proposes solutions and assists in implementation of ideas for improvement in patient care and departmental / hospital operations. Participates in the successful implementation of change. Identifies opportunities and implements strategies to decrease waste in medication. Participates in department QI as requested.
  • Other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
  • Special Skills:
    • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with occasional periods of above average pressure.
    • Must have basic computer skills.
    • Excellent customer service skills. Must be willing to work in all areas of the pharmacy services as assigned.
    • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with team members required.
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Education: High School Graduate or equivalent.
    • Experience: Three (3) years of hospital pharmacy experience or performance equivalent to 3 years of hospital pharmacy experience.
    • Licensure/Certifications: Licensed in the State of Arizona as a Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Technician certification.
  • Preferred Requirements:
    • Education: Completion of a certified pharmacy technician training program or pharmacy technician experience.
    • Experience: Previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred with training and experience in sterile (IV) compounding, including chemotherapy preparations. Good organisational skills, verbal and written communication skills, and basic computer skills preferred.
