Under general supervision, you will supervise pharmacists and technicians, manage budgets, develop training programs, and uphold regulatory standards to support the medical center's mission and patient safety.

Qualifications

• Full, current, unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in the U.S.
• Experience supervising pharmacists and technicians in inpatient settings preferred.
• Knowledge of regulatory and QA standards for pharmacy practice.

Job description

The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor functions under the general supervision of the Pharmacy Service in providing direct oversight and accountability of inpatient pharmacy at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• English Language Proficiency: Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
• Education: Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
• Verification of approved degree programs may be obtained from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, 20 North Clark Street, Suite 2500, Chicago, Illinois 60602-5109; phone: [phone], or through their Web site at: http://www.acpe-accredit.org/. • OR, Graduate of a foreign pharmacy degree program if you are able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT). • Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.
• In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must meet the following:
• GS-13 Grade Determinations: Pharmacy Supervisor (Inpatient) Experience.
• In addition to the GS-12 requirements, must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
• Experience includes: Interpret laboratory data to evaluate the efficacy of drug therapy and to anticipate side effect, toxicity, or adverse effects; Identification of any drug induced problems; Supervises, evaluates, and documents performance and counsel employees under his/her supervision.
• AND, Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs):
  • 1. Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff.
  • 2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.
  • 3. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy.
  • 4. Skill in managing people or programs.

Pharmacy Supervisor. Responsible for the professional and administrative management of an assigned area in pharmacy service, to include budgetary execution. Such individuals have responsibilities for supervising multiple pharmacists and technicians. Manages people, maintains effective interdepartmental relations, and cooperates with other services to accomplish the medical facility's mission and goals. Develops performance standards, assures that the program area is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements, designs and implements orientation and training programs for staff, and develops and maintains systems to monitor the performance of staff activities. Develops policies and procedures relative to their assigned area.

Preferred Experience:

• A minimum of 2-3 years experience in Inpatient Pharmacy Staffing to include 2 years supervisor experience within VA.

Physical Requirements:

Physical Requirements: The work is performed within the pharmacy and the medical center, and at times may require travel. The incumbent observes safety precautions while working with a variety of equipment. Work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions (e.g., risk exposure to caustic agents, flammable liquids when unpacking supplies or cleaning equipment). The incumbent works with drugs and chemicals in which care must be taken in the event accidental contact is made to the skin, eyes and lungs. Incumbent follows guidelines for preparation, handling and administration of hazardous drugs and disposal of all pharmaceutical waste in compliance with medical center policy.
