Job summary

UC Health is seeking a part-time Pharmacy Intern for the Outpatient Pharmacy at UC Medical Center. The intern will support pharmacists, clinical pharmacy specialists, and leadership in all aspects of pharmacy services, including rounds, counseling, drug information, dosing, preparation, distribution, and administration as allowed by law.

The intern will participate in formulary development, education for staff, and system-wide communications; no on-call requirements are included.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an accredited college of pharmacy.
• Must have current pharmacy intern registration with the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy.
• 0–6 months of related experience; 1–2 years preferred.
• Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail and time management.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide support for the Drug Policy Development Committee and subcommittees in UC Health's formulary system for inpatients and ambulatory patients.
• Maintain and update the record of DPD and subcommittee actions monthly.
• Develop New Drug Memos to educate staff on new formulary drugs.
• Update and format approved guidelines, therapeutic interchanges, and other formulary tools after DPD approval.
• Tabulate formulary changes related to cost savings for the system.
• Support drug information and staff education.
• Develop drug information responses on request.
• Provide notice of alternatives to drug shortages.
• Develop system-wide communications for policy updates and procedural changes.
• Support formulary and quality improvement initiatives.
• Assess medication use and compliance with the health-system formulary.
• Perform medication use evaluations as requested by DPD/subcommittees.
• Assist in enhancing technology used in the medication use process.
• Maintain competence and current intern registration.

UC Health is hiring a part time Pharmacy Intern for the Outpatient Pharmacy at the University of Cincinnati's Medical Center.

The Pharmacy Intern provides support to pharmacists, clinical pharmacy specialists, and pharmacy leadership in all aspects of providing pharmacy services. Functions performed under the supervision of a pharmacist include but are not limited to interdisciplinary patient care rounds, admission medication history, medication counseling and patient education, drug information, drug dosing, drug preparation, drug distribution, and medication administration as allowed by law.

• Maintains current intern registration.
• Attends pharmacy staff meetings.
• Participates in orientation, education, and training programs; reviews literature and other materials as assigned
• Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements.
• Meets hospital and department standards of performance.
• Maintains a neat, professional, and well-groomed appearance; observes pharmacy dress code; wears identification badge at all times

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED, the minimum required. Must be accepted to or enrolled in an accredited college of pharmacy, the minimum required.

License and Certification: Current pharmacy intern registration that is recognized by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy.

Work Experience: 0-6 months of equivalent experience, the minimum required. 1-2 years equivalent experience, preferred.

Required Skills and Knowledge: Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods; work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff; handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; set priorities and solve problems; respond quickly to emergency requests; communicate effectively (orally and in writing), and assist in meeting the pharmaceutical care needs of the patient populations served by the organization.

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $19.96/hr.- $27.86/hr.

The actual pay rate for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant's years of experience, unique skills and abilities, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and other requirements for the position.
