Job summary

Tufts Medical Center is seeking a Pharmacy Intern for the Central Pharmacy to support pharmacy services in a hospital environment. Under pharmacist supervision, you will assist with dispensing, inventory control, customer service, and record-keeping, contributing to optimal pharmaceutical care.

The role requires enrollment in an APCE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program, MA intern licensure, and completion of the first professional year.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Picks, delivers, and refills medication for automated dispensing machines.
• Delivers bulk medications and IV solutions to nursing units.
• Conducts inspections of medication rooms in patient care areas.
• Monitors refrigerator temperatures.
• Assists with transport of controlled substances (Schedule II–V).
• Requests and accepts prescriptions from a prescriber or prescriber's agent.
• Assists patients with prescription intake and over-the-counter sales.
• Compounds sterile and/or non-sterile products.
• Assists with medication reconciliation for admitted patients.
• Returns expired or discontinued medications to the pharmacy.
• Triages phone calls to the appropriate pharmacy staff member.
• Maintains collaborative relationships to achieve department goals.
• May cross train to work in more than one area of the pharmacy.

Physical Requirements:

• 1. Ability to walk and stand 90% of the day and to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
• 2. Frequent reaching and grasping below, at, and above shoulder level.
• 3. Pushing and/or pushing non-motorized equipment (e.g. carts, IV rolling rack, and medication rolling racks, etc.) weighing 40 to 60 lbs.
• 4. Regularly grasping and fine manipulation with hands.
• 5. Works in an area with some discomfort due to dust, dirt, and temperature changes.
• 6. Possibility of cuts from broken glass and some exposure to hazardous chemicals.
• 7. Performance of duties that involve no potential exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

• 1. Ability to read automated dispensing reports regularly

In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Pharmacy Services duties: Delivers pharmaceuticals. Includes professionals who are trained and sometimes licensed to dispense medicine/controlled substances. An organizational related support or service (administrative or clerical) role or a role that focuses on support of daily business activities (e.g., technical, clinical, non-clinical) operating in a "hands on" environment. The majority of time is spent in the delivery of support services or activities, typically under supervision. An entry level role that typically requires little or no prior knowledge or experience, work is routine or follows standard procedures, work is closely supervised, and communicates information that requires little explanation or interpretation.
