GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Pharmacy Intern assists pharmacists in providing safe, effective, and patient-centered pharmaceutical care while gaining practical experience as part of an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. Under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and within the scope permitted by Washington State law, the Pharmacy Intern supports medication distribution, clinical pharmacy services, inventory management, medication preparation, and patient education activities. The Pharmacy Intern collaborates with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to promote optimal medication therapy outcomes while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, professionalism, and regulatory compliance. The Pharmacy Intern performs all duties in a manner consistent with the department and organizational mission, vision, and values of Klickitat Valley Health.

QualificationsMinimum Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications):
  • Education / Licensure:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.
  • Current Washington State Pharmacy Intern license.
  • Experience:
  • Previous hospital or community pharmacy experience preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES (but not limited to):
  • Supports the organization's mission, vision, and values.
  • Performs duties only under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and within the scope permitted by Washington State law.
  • Assists pharmacists in reviewing medication orders and preparing medications for dispensing.
  • Prepares unit-dose medications, oral medications, compounded preparations, and sterile products as permitted by training, competency, and applicable regulations.
  • Assists with intravenous admixture preparation following USP standards and departmental procedures.
  • Assists pharmacists with medication reconciliation activities.
  • Participates in patient counseling and medication education under pharmacist supervision.
  • Responds to drug information requests by researching evidence-based resources and presenting findings to the pharmacist.
  • Assists pharmacists with therapeutic drug monitoring activities and clinical pharmacy services.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary patient care rounds when appropriate.
  • Assists with antimicrobial stewardship, formulary management, medication use evaluations, quality improvement initiatives, and other pharmacy projects.
  • Performs medication history collection under pharmacist supervision.
  • Refills and stocks automated dispensing cabinets (Pyxis) and floor stock medications.
  • Assists with medication inventory management, including ordering, receiving, stocking, and removal of expired medications.
  • Participates in controlled substance inventory and documentation activities as permitted.
  • Maintains accurate pharmacy records and documentation.
  • Utilizes pharmacy computer systems, automated dispensing systems, and the electronic medical record accurately and efficiently.
  • Answers telephone calls and communicates professionally with healthcare providers and nursing staff regarding pharmacy-related matters.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe pharmacy environment.
  • Complies with all hospital policies, pharmacy procedures, accreditation standards, and applicable federal and Washington State regulations.
  • Participates in required educational programs, competency assessments, department meetings, and continuing professional development.
  • Performs additional duties and projects as assigned.
  • Willingness to learn and use emerging technologies, including automation tools, software applications, and artificial intelligence.
