Job summary

JobRx, Inc. is seeking a part-time Pharmacy Intern to support daily inpatient and outpatient services. You will assist pharmacists, dispense prescriptions, and counsel patients on proper usage.

This role requires enrollment in the first professional year of a PharmD program and a current Michigan Pharmacy Intern license, with duties including order review, compounding, and ensuring accuracy in unit-dose processes.

Qualifications

  • Checks unit dose cart fill for accuracy against computer printout.
  • Compounds topical and internal dosage forms as prescribed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and hospital information; follows safety and regulatory practices.

Description

POSITION PURPOSE

Provides daily pharmacy technical and professional services to inpatients, outpatients and other Health Center departments. Dispenses prescriptions and counsels patients on the correct use of medications. Provides drug information to patients and health care professionals in the Health Center. Responds to routine and emergency requests in a prompt, efficient manner requiring some independent judgment, a good level of technical knowledge and a high degree of accuracy. The consequences of a compounding or drug selection error, if undetected, could result in serious patient injury.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Performs all functions of a Pharmacy Technician on a regular basis.
  2. Reviews, processes and dispenses outpatient prescriptions and counsels outpatients on the proper use of medication. Receives verbal prescriptions from physician for outpatient dispensing.
  3. Reviews written medication orders to determine clarity, reasonable dose, schedule and appropriate medication usage. Consults directly with physicians if change or clarification is needed and enters appropriate clarifications in patient’s charts.
  4. Checks unit dose cart fill for accuracy and completeness against computer printout.
  5. Compounds special topical and internal dosage forms not available through pharmaceutical manufacturers in accordance with established departmental practice.
  6. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
  7. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
  8. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Mission Health.
  9. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
  10. Performs duties in compliance with all federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Participates in ongoing studies, projects and clinical research under the direction of the management and the clinical staff.
  2. Participates in Drug Use Evaluation (DUE) and Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) programs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education:

Currently enrolled in at least the first professional year of study in an accredited college or school of Pharmacy.

Licensure:

Current State of Michigan License as a Pharmacy Intern

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations accurately as documented by the successful completion of an internal examination.
  2. Ability to stand for long periods of time (at least four and up to eight hours per day) or to walk long distances without difficulty.
  3. Basic typing skills. Basic computer skills to do order entry, generate reports, retrieve data and diagnose minor printer problems.
  4. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 100% of the time when processing medication orders including: Cartfill, Outpatient, Inpatient, Order Entry, First Dosing, Intravenous Room Set-up, Intravenous Admixture, and Bulk Manufacturing.
  5. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment when prioritizing work responsibilities.
  6. Ability to successfully complete an internal examination covering departmental procedures in all work areas. Ability to successfully complete an Aseptic Technique Testing and Challenge Kit on a regular basis.
  7. Interpersonal skills necessary for effective communications with patients, physicians, nurses, and other health care personnel in order to explain prescription use and gather and exchange other medication information.
  8. Analytical skills needed to effectively review the appropriateness of medication orders and to respond to drug information questions.
