Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy School; Pharm.D. degree preferred.

  • Progressively responsible experience in pharmacy and computer applications of pharmacy practice.
  • Over one year of related work experience required.

  • Manage all referrals submitted by Hy-Vee retail pharmacy locations and coordinate with retail pharmacists as needed.
  • Recruit and hire pharmacy personnel, manage payroll and scheduling, minimize overtime, and improve labor cost per prescription.
  • Audit inventory and implement loss prevention procedures; ensure regulatory compliance.

The Role and Why It's Important

The Pharmacy Department Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the pharmacy department, driving prescription count, patient count, and profitability while delivering exceptional customer service and maintaining a strong professional image in the community. In this role, you'll lead and develop your pharmacy team, ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations, and implement cost-effective business practices that support the department's long-term growth. What You'll Do
  • Supervise the operation of the pharmacy department and ensure accurate prescription filling and courteous, efficient service to all customers
  • Improve pharmacy prescription sales, profit, patient count, and professional image through strong operational leadership
  • Supervise and develop pharmacy staff through proper orientation, training, PTCB certification support, objective setting, and constructive discipline while building morale, motivation, and loyalty
  • Manage all referrals submitted by Hy-Vee retail pharmacy locations and coordinate with retail pharmacists as needed
  • Recruit and hire pharmacy personnel, manage budgeted payroll and scheduling, minimize overtime, and improve labor cost per prescription
  • Recommend and coordinate sales and promotional programs for the pharmacy department
  • Analyze and recommend loss prevention procedures and ensure proper implementation of internal controls
  • Conduct regularly scheduled inventories, check pharmacy security procedures, and perform mini audits
  • Oversee training of pharmacy staff on the designated pharmacy point of sale system and assist in resolving questions and problems
  • Review pharmacy department policies, procedures, and inventory to ensure compliance with federal and state pharmacy regulations including DEA and Board of Pharmacy requirements
  • Monitor compliance through regular audits and verify that proper records including controlled substance records are maintained and readily available
  • Prepare and submit required records and reports for the company and governmental or regulatory authorities as authorized
  • Recommend and audit inventory levels based on prescription volume, monitor the designated inventory system, and review daily purchases
  • Resolve customer complaints regarding service, pricing, personnel, and all aspects of pharmacy operations
  • Build growth and sales through counseling customers on OTC medications and products
  • Represent the company through membership and active participation in pharmaceutical professional groups and organizations
  • Oversee nursing home accounts and delivery of medications
  • Maintain the confidentiality of customers' private medical information in accordance with HIPAA
  • Adhere to all Hy-Vee policies, store guidelines, and all statutes and regulations pertaining to pharmacy management
  • Report to work when scheduled and work the expected number of hours
Your Skills
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with customers, staff, healthcare colleagues, and regulatory agencies
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, especially in healthcare settings
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of pharmacy computer applications including PIS, order management, automated dispensing, CPOE, IV compounders, packagers, bar code applications, and supply chain solutions
  • Lead and develop a team through strong supervisory, coaching, and problem-solving skills
  • Maintain a high level of discretion and integrity when handling confidential patient health information
Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Health Wellness Home, Store Operations, and Perishables Direct Reports: Staff Pharmacist(s); Pharmacy Technician(s); Pharmacy Intake/Outbound Coordinator

Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy School required; Pharm.D. degree preferred

  • Progressively responsible experience in pharmacy and computer applications of pharmacy practice required

Physical Requirements

Ability to frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in the pharmacy and dispensing area, including extended periods at a pharmacy counter or workstation while verifying and processing prescriptions

Ability to verify, dispense, and counsel patients on prescriptions, and administer immunizations, in accordance with state and federal pharmacy regulations

Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and sharps (needles, lancets) associated with immunization administration and pharmacy operations

Ability to perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This role is performed in a pharmacy and store environment with frequent and prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout the shift. There is occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals or solvents during compounding, including chemotherapy drugs.

This pharmacy handles and prepares hazardous drugs; personnel of reproductive capability should be aware that exposure may cause acute and chronic effects, and that following all pharmacy policies and procedures is essential to minimizing risk. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
