Job summary

Gritman Medical Center in Idaho is seeking an Oncology Clinical Pharmacist to ensure safe and effective use of chemotherapy and supportive care medications within a community-based oncology/hematology clinic and infusion center.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Current licensure as a pharmacist in Idaho or eligible for licensure within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Review oncology infusion orders for accuracy and adherence to protocols.
  • Independently manage aspects of patient care under a collaborative practice agreement.
  • Provide drug information and clinical support to oncologists and nursing staff.
  • Monitor patient responses and adjust therapy with the clinical team.
  • Assist with adverse effects management and optimizing supportive care regimens.
  • Respond to infusion reaction events and provide patient education.
  • Coordinate oral chemotherapy follow-up and liaise with specialty pharmacies.
  • Respond to pharmacy consult requests.
  • Oversee aseptic preparation of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
  • Ensure proper labeling, storage, and transport of medications.
  • Ensure safe compounding with double-check and proper documentation.
  • Support hospital staff with questions, dispensing, and drug information.
  • Supervise drug supply and materials ordering by oncology pharmacy technician.
  • Evaluate biosimilar agents based on cost-effectiveness and formulary requirements.
  • Assist with prior authorization for quick drug approvals.
  • Assist with medication-related financial assistance for patients.
  • Collaborate with EMR and Specialty Pharmacy to ensure up-to-date treatment builds.
  • Maintain compliance with professional safety standards and regulatory mandates.

Job Summary

The Oncology Clinical Pharmacist works collaboratively with physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure the safe and effective use of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and supportive care medications in a patient-centered, community-based oncology/hematology clinic and infusion center. This position requires a strong foundation in oncology pharmacotherapy, dedication to improving processes, focus on patient safety, and an unbridled passion for patient care.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Review and verify oncology infusion treatment orders for accuracy, appropriateness, and compliance with evidence-based protocols
  • Independently manage some aspects of patient care under the guidelines of a collaborative practice agreement
  • Provide drug information and clinical support to oncologists and nursing staff regarding oncology medications and regimens
  • Monitor patient responses to therapy and collaborate with the clinical team to adjust treatment as necessary
  • Assist nursing staff with patient triage by offering support in managing adverse effects and optimizing supportive care regimens
  • Respond to infusion reaction events
  • Provide one-on-one, therapy specific education to patients and caregivers at scheduled appointments and as needed regarding medication use, potential side effects and adherence strategies
  • Oral chemotherapy patient management and continuous follow-up including coordination with specialty pharmacies
  • Responds to pharmacy consult requests

Dispensing and Compounding

  • Oversee aseptic preparation of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and adjunctive medications in compliance with USP /, state and federal regulations
  • Ensure proper labeling, storage and transport of hazardous and non-hazardous mediations
  • Ensure safe and accurate compounding through utilization of a double-check system and confirm appropriate and complete documentation in Pharmacy Keeper and/or EMR
  • Available to other hospital personnel and the medical staff to answer questions, dispense medications and provide drug information
  • Supervises appropriate drug supply and materials ordering by oncology pharmacy technician

Operations

  • Evaluate and implement biosimilar agents based on cost-effectiveness and various insurance formulary requirements
  • Assist with prior authorization process to ensure quick and accurate drug approval
  • Assist with medication related patient financial assistance opportunities
  • Works collaboratively with Specialty Pharmacy to explore best financial options for both the patient and the facility
  • Collaborate with EMR team to ensure oncology drug builds and treatment plans are correct and up to date
  • Exercises oversight of professional safety standards and state and federal regulatory mandates
Job Requirements

Required Education

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy

Required Licenses and/or Certifications

Current licensure as a pharmacist in the state of Idaho or eligible for licensure within six months of hire.

Preferred Work Experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in oncology pharmacy in any setting
  • Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Familiarity with oncology protocols, oncology patient care, compounding standards, oncology guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of PGY1 and PGY2 in Oncology
  • Board Certified in Oncology (BCOP)
