Pharmacist Intern – Sutter Health, Santa Rosa, CA

Position Overview: Must be licensed as a pharmacist within 90 days of hire. Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, performs pharmaceutical procedures for medication preparation and distribution that ensures safe, effective, and cost efficient medication therapy. Provides clinical support to patient care plans, adheres to all regulations, and acts as a support person to the staff pharmacist to gain experience for licensure.

Job Accountabilities

• Assists in pharmaceutical services: drug preparation, distribution, inventory control, quality control, and documentation per policy.
• Performs billing, pricing, record keeping, and regulatory compliance.
• Maintains drug distribution records, works with vendors for requisition or return.
• Accurately interprets, transcribes and dispenses orders under pharmacist direction.
• Ensures routine and priority tasks completed within departmental time frames.
• Mentors students, interns and pharmacy technicians.
• General clerical tasks: answering phones, updating patient information, entering and revising EHR.
• Completes accurate documentation for patient records.
• Participates in quality improvement, updates safety manuals, maintains a clean environment.
• Protects patients and technicians by infection‑control protocols.
• Maintains confidentiality of PHI and prevents unauthorized disclosure.
• Assists pharmacists in medication administration, documentation, and compliance with state/federal laws.
• Monitors nursing unit inspections, maintains controlled substance records, removes outdated drugs.
• Retains certification, completes continuing education.
• Develops staff pharmacological knowledge through clinical programs and training.

Education & Certification

Must have satisfactorily completed three years of internship post‑graduation from an accredited pharmacy school.

Certification & Licensure: PHARMI–Pharmacy Intern; must be licensed as a pharmacist within 90 days of hire.

Skills & Knowledge

• Working knowledge of home infusion pharmacy operations.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, generic and trade names, pharmaceutical calculations, laws and regulations.
• Understanding of different pharmacy practice settings, including narcotic delivery and procedures.
• Ability to identify and use pharmaceutical and medical abbreviations and symbols.
• Basic knowledge of legal requirements and accreditation standards (NABP, TJC, Title XXII, DHS, DEA, FDA, USP).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to explain sensitive information to diverse audiences.
• Well‑developed time management and organizational skills.

Work Schedule

Full Time, 40 hours per week, variable shift hours; 10‑hour shift, every other weekend requirement.
