Qualifications

  • PharmD or BS Pharmacy Degree required or equivalent.
  • Active pharmacist licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy or obtainable before initiation of employment.
  • Two years of prior pharmacist experience or equivalent required.

Responsibilities

  • Direct workflow, supervise pharmacy personnel, and ensure completion of tasks for Central Outpatient Pharmacy.
  • Develop and review clinical protocols and policies for the area.
  • Hold the NC Board of Pharmacy licensed Pharmacist in Charge designation.
  • Ensure high level of service for patients, students, employees, and campus community.
  • Coach team on service improvements and patient care opportunities.
  • Coordinate Pharmacy team activities and track progress toward goals.
  • Maintain inventory to support timely prescriptions and service needs.
  • Develop and maintain a training program; mentor staff.
  • Teach students, residents, and new staff; act as a preceptor.
  • Provide performance feedback and conduct reviews as required.
  • Manage staffing to meet operational needs.
  • Create and maintain area-specific policies and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Provide clinical and operational pharmacist services to support access, transitions, and outcomes.

Summary

The Pharmacy Coordinator for Central Outpatient Pharmacy (COP) serves as the Pharmacist in Charge and provides leadership for pharmacy operations supporting the UNC Medical Center community. Located on the UNC Medical Center campus in Chapel Hill, COP is a high-volume, dynamic pharmacy serving a diverse patient population. In addition to traditional outpatient dispensing, COP manages a robust Meds-to-Beds program that helps ensure patients receive discharge medications before leaving the hospital, supporting safer and more seamless transitions from hospital to home. This position plays a key role in ensuring safe, efficient, patient-centered pharmacy services while also partnering with internal medical center teams to support medication access, improve discharge workflows, and advance programs that enhance patient care. We are seeking a motivated, organized, and collaborative pharmacist with a strong clinical foundation, experience in outpatient/retail pharmacy practice, and an interest in building services that improve access, outcomes, and the patient experience. The role is responsible for coordinating pharmacy operations and supporting key functions including regulatory compliance, inventory management, staff development and providing patient care. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with UNC Medical Center and system pharmacy stakeholders to support and expand outpatient and transitional care pharmacy services. This position reports to the Clinical Manager of System Retail and Outpatient Pharmacies. Health-system pharmacy experience and supervisory are preferred.



Responsibilities


  • Direct workflow, supervise pharmacy personnel, and ensure completion of necessary tasks for optimal function of Central Outpatient Pharmacy. Responsible for developing and reviewing clinical protocols and operational policies/procedures within the area. Holds the NC Board of Pharmacy licensed Pharmacist in Charge designation.

  • Ensures the pharmacy team maintains an exceptional level of service for patients, including students, employees, and other members of the campus community. Addresses patient concerns in a timely manner. Coaches team on service improvement opportunities.

  • Coordinates the Pharmacy team's activities and documents progress toward approved team clinical and operational goals.

  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels to support timely prescription fulfillment and service needs, including seasonal or program-driven demand.

  • Develops and maintains a training program for the team. Mentors colleagues to ensure proficiency of all team members as required.

  • Teaches students, residents, and new pharmacy staff and participates in scholarly activities. Acts as a preceptor for residents and pharmacy students.

  • Provides formal and informal work performance feedback to team members, including the preparation and administration of performance reviews as required. Provides formal and informal feedback to include corrective action when necessary.

  • Manages priorities to meet team and program expectations, including ensuring appropriate staffing coverage to support operational needs.

  • Creates and/or maintains policies and procedures specific to the practice area. Works collaboratively with retail Pharmacy Coordinators, Medical Center stakeholders, and system pharmacy leadership on process improvement efforts.

  • Provides clinical and operational pharmacist services to patients as required, including services that support medication access, transitions of care, service growth, and patient outcomes.

  • Identifies and implements clinical pathway and/or operational process improvement initiatives to provide optimal care while minimizing cost.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external partners, including UNC Medical Center teams, system pharmacy teams, and community partners as appropriate.

  • Participates in candidate interviews and selection. Conducts candidate interviews and selects appropriate candidates for position vacancies as required.

  • Supports compliance with federal, state, local, institutional policies, procedures, standards, and regulations.
