Job summary

Federal Express Corporation in North Carolina is seeking a yard switcher to move trailers between yards and dock doors, and assist with loading/unloading of packages as needed. Must maintain a valid CDL Class A and a DOT file, with a focus on safety and efficient yard operations.

Shifts start early, with 1:00 AM to 4:30 AM starts and 3–6 hour daily runs, offering a hands-on role in a fast-paced logistics environment.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Performs trailer switches to move parked trailers from yard to doors or vice versa.
• Communicates with management to coordinate trailer movements in the yard.
• Documents trailer moves using the Yard Management System or switcher cards.
• Performs pre- and post-trip inspections on switcher equipment.
• Follows safety processes for yard switching and performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

Responsible for the movement of trailers to and from the unload / load doors and throughout the yard. May also be responsible for the physical loading, unloading and/or sorting of packages by hand, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and placing, in a safe and efficient manner.

Essential Functions

• Performs trailer switches defined as hooking and moving a parked trailer from the yard to a load/unload door or hooking and moving a trailer from a door to the yard.
• Communicates with management and/or central control to coordinate trailer movements in the yard.
• Documents trailer moves using the Yard Management System (where available) or switcher cards
• Performs pre- and post-trip inspections on switcher equipment.
• Understands and demonstrates effective yard switching safety processes and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Education

None required

Minimum Experience

No experience required; six (6) months of experience as a package handler or switching/CDL operator experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file.
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class A) to operate in interstate commerce is required
• Ability to understand and follow instruction regarding work duties and safety methods.
• Ability to discern numbers and information in order to sort packages correctl
• Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes and unloading devices
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Operating a specialized yard tractor, you hook, move, and position 48-foot and 53-foot trailers . Your primary responsibility is maneuvering these massive trailers in tight spaces and backing them perfectly flush to the warehouse dock doors for loading/unloading.

Pay Transparency

Pay: 22.55/hr

Additional Details

Additional Details: Shift Times: Typically begins between 1:00 AM and 4:30 AM and ends between 7:30 AM and 10:00 AM . Shifts generally run for 3 to 6 hours depending on daily package volume.
