Job summary

YMCA of Memphis & The Mid-South is seeking an Adult Fitness - Personal Trainer to design and implement individual workout plans for members one-on-one and in small groups. You will model the organization’s core values and provide safe, effective training programs.

The role requires current national certifications in personal training, CPR/AED/First Aid, and at least 2 years in health and fitness, with ability to assess and guide members based on goals and testing results.

Qualifications

  • Certifications in personal training from ACSM, ACE, NSCA, AFAA, NASM or NETA.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certifications current.
  • Experience in fitness testing and designing fitness programs for members of varying ages and levels.
  • Minimum 2 years in health and fitness field.
  • Two-year exercise science education or related field or 1 year experience.

Responsibilities

  • Attend New Employee Orientation within 20 days of employment.
  • Follow YMCA grooming and dress standards.
  • Understand and follow all room guidelines, policies and chain of command.
  • Complete accident/incident reports immediately after occurrence.
  • Notify Wellness Director about equipment or facility issues.
  • Arrange substitutes 24 hours prior to scheduled sessions when absent.
  • Maintain communication with clients.
  • Demonstrate proper exercise form and ensure safe techniques.
  • Read exercise/testing equipment, including BP and heart rate.
  • Complete all required employment records.
  • Refrain from using cell phones while working.

Education

Current ACSM, ACE, NSCA, AFAA, NASM, NETA certification in personal training
Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications
Two-year exercise science education or related field
Experience in fitness testing and program design

ADULT FITNESS - PERSONAL TRAINER
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Personal trainers must be energetic, dedicated and motivated individuals who enjoy working with members one-on-one and in small groups, designing and implementing individual workout plans. All Personal Trainers must demonstrate and enforce the core values (Caring Honesty, Respect and Responsibility) to staff, lay leaders, YMCA members, program participants and the general public.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Attend New Employee Orientation within the first 20 days of employment and attend additional department meetings as scheduled.
  • Follow the Memphis and the Mid-South standards of grooming and dress.
  • Know, understand and follow all room guidelines, policies and chain of command of the YMCA facility.
  • Be responsible for completing and turning in accident/incident reports immediately after occurrence.
  • Notify the Wellness Director, or other staff member whenever there is a potentially serious problem with equipment or facility.
  • Be Responsible for finding your own qualified substitute for absence, or canceling training sessions a minimum of 24 hours prior to scheduled appointment.
  • Maintain good communication with all clients
  • Physically be able to demonstrate proper exercise form and avoid contraindicated exercises.
  • Visually able to observe members to assure correct training methods, techniques, and positions.
  • Able to read exercise and testing equipment accurately, including but not limited to, blood pressure, heart rate/pulse.
  • Complete all required employment records
  • Refrain from using cell phone while working in all capacities, i.e.: texting, talking or surfing the internet.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Current ACSM, ACE, NSCA, AFAA, NASM, NETA (accredited organizations) certification in personal training.
  2. Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications
  3. Experience in fitness testing, exercise program design, and teaching appropriate fitness programs to members of varying ages and fitness level
  4. Minimum of 2 years in health and fitness field
  5. Two-year exercise science education, or related field, or minimum of 1 year experience.
  6. Accumulated continuing education credits to maintain certification(s)
  7. Full working knowledge of the facility’s safety and emergency procedures.
  8. Ability to recognize participants who are in distress.
  9. Demonstrate sound judgment in handling issues with staff and members.
  10. Administer national YMCA fitness assessments, or its equivalent.
  11. Interpret assessment results to members and, based on evaluation and member’s goals, design and implement a fitness program.
  12. Attend staff meetings as directed.
