Responsibilities

  • Promote YMCA core values in all program activities.

Job description

Position Summary

The Personal Trainer is responsible for designing and implementing safe, effective, and individualized fitness programs that support members in achieving their health and wellness goals. This position provides exceptional customer service, promotes member engagement, and creates a welcoming environment.

Essential Functions
  • Promotes and incorporates the YMCA five core values of honesty, responsibility, respect, caring and faith into all program activities.
  • Increase personal training clients by actively building positive relationships with current members, making calls to potential clients, and conducting wellness consultations and fitness orientations.
  • Conduct fitness assessments to evaluate members' current fitness levels, goals, and health history.
  • Design and implement individualized exercise programs based on member goals, abilities, and medical considerations.
  • Educate and encourage clients on proper exercise form, injury prevention, healthy lifestyle habits, and wellness strategies.
  • Monitor participant progress, adjust fitness programs as needed, and document training sessions.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group personal training sessions using safe exercise techniques and proper equipment.
  • Follow YMCA policies on redemption of personal training sessions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe fitness environment by inspecting equipment and reporting maintenance needs promptly.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Promote YMCA programs and services that support member wellness and engagement.
  • Maintain current certifications and complete all required YMCA training.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, risk management procedures, and safety guidelines. Report all incidents and complete accident reports as necessary.
  • Attend staff meetings and training as required.

Qualifications
  • 1. Minimum age of 18 years.
  • 2. High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3. Current nationally accredited Personal Training certification.
  • 4. Previous experience providing personal training in a fitness facility.
  • 5. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training upon hire.
  • 6. Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • 7. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • 8. Demonstrated knowledge of exercise science, strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, and functional movement.
Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

Physical Demands

Ability to lead and demonstrate proper exercise techniques and proper use of workout equipment. Ability to perform and demonstrate physical movements including standing, walking, bending, squatting, lunging, lifting, and stretching. Ability to lift, move, and set up fitness equipment such as weights, bars, steps, and mats (generally up to 25-50 pounds). Ability to remain physically active and on your feet for the duration of personal training sessions. Ability to observe participants to ensure proper form and safe participation. Ability to communicate clearly with participants, including providing verbal instruction in a group environment.

Hours

Flexible scheduling and available during operational hours of the YMCA, which may include mornings, day, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a fitness studio or gym environment with moderate to loud noise levels due to music and participant activity. Environment may include warm temperatures and high levels of physical activity. Some activities may take place in an outdoor environment.
